I groaned and pulled my duvet over my head when my alarm started screeching next to my bed. I had hardly slept night. I was so nervous that I tossed and turned almost all night. I kept imagining exceptionally unlikely scenarios in my head, and what I would do if they happened.
Today was the start of one of the most important journeys I would undergo in my life; it was my first day as a private in the South Korean military. This week, the platoon lieutenants would see the incoming privates in action. We had to undergo various stages over the next few days, including firearm training, physical training and tactical training in an attempt to impress the lieutenants so they would assign us to their platoons for the duration of our training.
I was exceptionally confident in my skills. My dad had trained me throughout my childhood, starting with self defence and as I got older he started taking me to range with him to become accustomed to a weapon. I was taught how, and when to use it.
My brother, Hosoek, didn't take any interest in training with my father, he was much more creative than I was. I liked to get my hands dirty and he enjoyed spending time inside, messing around with his piano and the various other instruments he had collected over the years. He was exceptionally talented and has produced a handful of songs that I listened to regularly.
"Liz, honey, are you awake?" I heard my mother as she gently knocked on my door
I groaned in response and pulled my head out from under the duvet and stared blankly at the ceiling; watching the fan go around and around. I didn't feel mentally prepared to face the hundreds of soldiers that were all fighting to get into the platoons of their choice; fighting and pushing to get noticed by the lieutenants.
I slowly sat up and pulled my legs off the bed, placing them on the floor in front of me. I stared at my toes and wiggled them slightly; procrastinating as much as I could until I absolutely had to start getting ready. I glanced over at my training uniform hanging up on my cupboard door, I had made sure to iron my camo cargo pants the night before so I would look neat and presentable; they were paired with an assigned skin tight black t-shirt and lace-up black boots.
I stood up off my bed and stretched, trying to get the blood flowing through my body.
"Honey, breakfast is downstairs when you're ready" my mom said as she peeped her head through the doorway, having opened the door slightly.
"Thanks mom, I'll be down in a few" I said as I smiled over at her. She closed the door again and I could hear her footsteps heading down the stairs.
"Well I guess I better shower," I said to myself as I made my way towards my bathroom, "No use in being late on my first day."
I opened the shower door and started the water. While I waited for the water to heat up, I pulled off my pyjamas and tied my hair up into a tight bun on top of my head. There was no point in washing it if i was going to be running around all day.
I stepped into the shower, making quick work of washing myself from head to toe. As I finished rinsing off my face wash, I turned off the water and stood in the shower, not wanting to get out because it meant I would have to console my sensitive mother waiting for me downstairs. She had never wanted me to enlist. She didn't want me to die alone like my father had. I tried my best to tell her that this is what I wanted for myself; I had no inclination to settle down and start a family, it wasn't me. I knew Hosoek would give her the grandchildren she so desperately wanted.
I stepped out of the shower and wrapped my neon pink towel around my body. I walked over to the mirror, my emerald green eyes staring back at me as I examined myself. I had built up quite a bit of muscle while training; my arms and shoulders were toned, but not huge. I was much stronger than I used to be and I knew I needed to be. Females were not treated with the same respect as men in the military; we had to work twice as hard to be seen as half as good.
