Chapter Twenty-Four

The group that Jungkook and I were part of moved onto the sprints next. It consisted of one hundred, two hundred and three hundred metre sprints. They were easy, and had taken less than twenty minutes for the entire group to do all three. So we sat around, lounging on the grass to catch our breath, and waited for the other team to finish with the beep test so we could move on.

Jungkook and I sat beside each other and watched as the last few soldiers sprinted between the two lines of the beep test, with people failing with every passing round. The gap between the deeps was shockingly short and I was not looking forward to our turn.

"I hated these at school..." I grumbled to Jungkook, keeping my voice low so none of the officials heard me complaining.

"Me too, I was never a runner, neither sprinting nor endurance..." Jungkook chuckled softly in response.

The other team wandered towards the track, indicating that they had finished, so our group stood up and walked over to Minho, who was conducting the test.

"Welcome soldiers, this is your standard beep test, nothing special. No one is going to be judged for how far they can get, we are just going to keep your statistics on record for future reference, should you be placed in a platoon," Minho started hollering instructions to the group as we got close enough to hear him, "Once you are finished, please give the number of rounds you completed to the sergeant," Minho gestured to a man sitting on a chair over his shoulder, "For those of you that do not know what a beep test is, I will give you a quick rundown on what needs to happen. There are two lines of cones set up twenty metres apart. When you hear the first beep, you will run from one line, to the other, making sure you get there before the next beep.

When you hear the next beep, you run to the other line of cones, etcetera. The time between the beeps gradually decreases, meaning you will have less time to get to the next line of cones. Running from one line of cones to the other and back counts as one, you are responsible for keeping track of your own number. You have to stop if you do not make it to the line of cones before the next beep. Got it? Good. Make your way to the line of cones on the right and I will start the test."

The group wandered over to the line of cones and got ready.

"Keep up princess..." Jungkook whispered in my ear as we stood behind the line.

"Watch it Jeon, you don't know who you're messing with..." I remarked with snark in my voice, nudging him with my shoulder.

Minho started the test, and everyone started to run simultaneously, boots pounding into the ground rhythmically. Most people made it to about eight repetitions, I made it to ten and Jungkook made it to eleven. I knew he would never let me live that down, knowing how competitive he is; but he was never malicious about it. The last person stopped at fourteen, which Minho said was one of the highest he had ever seen.

Minho wandered to where the group had gathered around the sergeant, giving our numbers, and said "Good job today everyone, you may head back to your dorms. Your dinner should be waiting for you,"

Jungkook and I gave our numbers to the sergeant and made our way back to the dorm, walking with a few of the other soldiers. Jungkook was making conversation with Kong while I walked quietly beside them, completely lost in my thoughts.

My mind wandered to the next day of draining, it was going to be a tough day. As far as I knew it was tactical training, so we would be able to get a feel for what it's like in the field. My father had specialised in tactics, so he was always on the front line. He had always spoken so fondly about the team he had worked with, he said they were like family to him. I didn't have it in me to specialise in tactics, not after what had happened to him. It broke our family, he was taken from us too soon and I didn't want to follow in his footsteps that way. I wanted to honour his memory and rise through the ranks to bring honour to our name, and prove that a woman can do it at the same time.
