I looked over my left shoulder to see the lieutenants arriving; they lined up on the cobblestone path that lined the left hand side of the course. As I normally did, I scanned over the faces of the men, looking for Namjoon, and he wasn't among them; not yet anyway. Just because he wasn't here, doesn't mean I wouldn't take this course any less seriously.
The fact that I'm small and light means that I would have an advantage over the men in the dorm. I'm lighter on my feet and can move over and under obstacles with ease.
"Alright 19, line up," Minho yelled from the cobblestone path that lined the right hand side of the course.
I walked up to the starting line and stood behind it, anxiously awaiting the whistle. Jungkook stood next to me, his arm rubbing against mine. I looked up to him and gave him a gentle nudge. He looked down at me and I sent him a wink. He smiled and winked back before we both returned our attention to the daunting course standing in front of us. My heart was beating hard against my rib cage, fueled by the anxiety coursing through my veins.
The sound of the whistle echoed through the course, followed by the sound of footsteps barreling down the course. I pulled out in front of the group, trying to keep in front of the bulkier men in the dorm, because I knew their agility skills wouldn't be marvelous. I was the first soldier on the middle balancing beam. I jogged down the log, ensuring to keep my balance, not wanting to fall into the holes on either side of it. From what I could see while I ran along the log, the hole wouldn't be easy to get out of on your own, someone would have to help you out of it. I ran off the end of the log, making sure to keep my pace up, not wanting the others to catch up with me.
The next obstacle was the up and unders. The first pole was an under. I slowed my pace and slid under the pole, ducking my head under it and standing up on the other side. I jogged to the high pole, placing my hands on it to pull myself up before swinging my leg over it and rolling over onto the other side. There were another four low beams and three high beams. Once I made it under the last log, there were a few soldiers hot on my tail, so I picked up my pace. I ran up to the mud crawl, picked up the net and crawled under it.
I made my way into the mud, it was cold, soft and wet. My hands sunk elbow deep into the mud, and the sudden change in temperature caused a wave of goosebumps to crawl over my skin.
"Oh my god, ew" I groaned to myself.
I propped myself up using both of my elbows to keep my face out of the mud and started to make my way forward. It was difficult to try and keep my grip on my feet, so I felt like I was flailing around like an animal in distress as I made my way through the mud. I focused on pulling my knees forward, digging my feet into the mud and pushing myself forward. I guided myself using my hands and elbows to make sure I was moving in a straight line. I pulled myself out of the mud and crawled out from under the net on the other side.
The mud clung heavily to my clothes. I jumped up and down on the spot, trying to rid myself of the excess weight that would slow me down. As my feet hit the ground after my last hop, I took off running again. I took a quick glance over my shoulder to see soldiers starting to emerge from the mud crawl. I looked back in front of me and headed, at a full sprint, to the tractor tyres.
I placed each foot into a tyre on either side and hopped from one to the next. It was a quick and easy obstacle. Once I was on the other side, I started running again. I was starting to lose my breath, and I felt my chest starting to tighten. Cardio had never been a strong point for me, so I took a mental note to start running a bit more. If I wanted to be the best, I had to train harder than I had been thus far.
I stopped in front of the climbing wall and placed my hands on my hips in an attempt to catch my breath. I grabbed the rope that hung on the wall and gave it a few hard tugs to make sure it was secure. I held myself up with the rope and placed both my feet flat on the wall. I pulled myself up with my arms and walked up the wall. As I approached the top of the wall, my arms started to burn. I tried to support more of my weight on my feet so I lowered them on the wall and tucked the front of my boot in between two of the planks and pushed myself up. My new method slowed me down, but I was running out of energy to keep up the pace I had been moving at.
