I walked into the dining hall to see Jungkook sitting on his own at our table in the corner, slouched over his try of food; his mood obvious from his body language. Let alone was he in pain, but he also looked as though the life had even sucked out of him. I quickly grabbed a tray of food and headed over to him.
"Hey Kook, how are you feeling?" I asked softly, not wanting to upset him s I settled into the seat across the table from him. His face hardened at my question. He took a moment before looking up at me. The bruise around his eye was black and looked vicious. The cut on his lip had dried but his lip was still swollen. He was a mess.
"I feel about as good as I look." He mumbled almost inaudibly.
"What did Jackson say about your training?" I pried, cautious of my wording.
"He said I could train if I wanted to, but I could stop at any point should the pain become too much to handle."
A wave of relief flowed over me, I would be devastated if he couldnt train because of me and my stupid actions. Even though I wasn't the one that hurt him directly, I still felt somewhat responsible for what happened. I should never have provoked Jungho and should have bit my tongue when it came to insulting him.
"That's great Kook, I'm really glad," I sent him a weak smile, trying to make him feel better before dropping my gaze to the tray of food before me which was suddenly unappetizing.
"Liz, stop feeling guilty, this wasn't your fault... " he trailed off as he played with his food in front of him, "That man is a monster, and should never have been a sergeant in the first place. He would have hurt you had I not been there, and not in a way I wish to think about."
I took a deep breath and swallowed the lump that had risen into my throat, realising Jungkook was right. Jungho was in the right place, at the right time to catch me alone. I couldn't help but think he had been waiting for me for that exact reason. Who knows how long he had been watching me, learning my routine to catch me at the only possible opportunity I had been alone since I arrived at the camp. He must have overheard mine and Jungkook's conversation when I told him I would go to the lockeroom alone to drop off my towel and let Jungkook go climb into bed in the meantime. Jungho is so calculating and viscous, I'm relieved Jungkook has stuck by my side. If he hadn't, who knows what could have happened; both in the kitchen and in that corridor.
"I can't thank you enough Jungkook," I said as I gently took his hand that was placed on the table next to his tray, "If you hadn't... I would have, shit, I don't think I would have been able to stay here."
Jungkook squeezed my hand, giving me the reassurance I think we both needed.
"Now that he's gone, we will both sleep better," Jungkook said, giving me a lopsided smile because of his swollen lip.
"You haven't been sleeping?" I asked with surprise.
"Have you? I couldn't, knowing that he could come in at any time and do unspeakable things to you."
"Kook, I had no idea that he had affected you so much,"
"You didn't see the way he looked at you." Jungkook muttered as he took another reluctant mouthful of his breakfast, "I know what men want when they look at a woman like that,"
He was right, yet again, I had no idea. I knew Jungho was an asshole, but I had no idea he wanted me sexually as well, at least not until he attacked me in the kitchen. I had assumed I had struck a nerve by disrespecting him and he only had it out for me to kick me out of the camp, not to molest me.
I placed my elbows on the table and buried my face in my hands, not wanting to look at Jungkook. I hated the fact that I had been so ignorant towards the way Jungho's behaviour had affected him. I had slept fairly soundly while he lay awake and worried all night about my safety, and I had no idea.
"19, breakfast is over, you'll be starting at the physical obstacle course today and after lunch you will be doing the agility obstacle course," Jackson's voice boomed through the room from the doorway.
Jungkook and I put our trays away and headed out the door, and past where Jackson was standing.
"We don't have time to do the paperwork now, see me after dinner," Jackson said with a nod, eyeing both Jungkook and I as we passed him.
"Will do, thanks Jackson," I said with a smile, wrapping Jungkook's arm around my shoulder to help him along. The physical obstacle course looked much more difficult than the agility one. The course was made out of wood, just like the other one, but this consisted of a handful more obstacles. From where I was standing on the sidelines, I could see a climbing rope, at least ten meters tall, some monkey bars and a long straight in between two obstacles that I'm assuming we would have to sprint down.
"Welcome everyone," a tall, muscular man yelled from in front of the group, causing the crowd of soldiers I was standing in to fall silent, "My name is Minho and I will be guiding you through your physical training today. You will be with me and my team all day. Seeing as there is such a large group of you with us today, each dorm will have their own sergeant to guide them while training," he stated, his voice was lower than when he had started speaking seeing as the group had fallen silent.
I was glad we would be split up into dorms, it means I could keep a close eye on Jungkook. I didn't want him to push himself too hard and cause more damage to his already fragile body.
"There will be five waves, each wave consisting of two dorms. You will have 12 minutes to complete the course in its entirety. Should you fail, you will be pulled off the course when the time is up, and it will not bode well for you." Minho instructed, "Dorms 11 and 12 will be going first, followed by 13 and 14, and so on."
We would be the only dorm in our wave, and we would be going last, putting us at a disadvantage, again.
"There will be a 5 minute interval between waves to ensure you are spread evenly over the course. Seeing as you are unable to see the entire course from here, I will give you a brief outline of what is to come.
You will start with a series of low logs that you will need to hop over, an easy start to warm up. Then there are three rope swings in succession. The gap is five meters wide, and there is water at the bottom to cushion your fall, should you need it. Then there is a jump wall which is a metre and a half tall. You will need to get over it without the aid of your teammates or a rope. Next up, we have the monkey bars, the gaps between the bars get progressively larger so you will need to swing to reach the last few. There are fifteen bars in total. Then we have the climbing rope. It is 8 meters tall. You will need to climb to the top, ring the bell and make your way back down safely before you are able to move on. If you don't ring the bell, you will have to start over. Then we have a two hundred metre dash, which you will need to sprint. Next is the pull up bar, you will need to complete 30 pull ups, 30 push ups and 15 burpees before being allowed to continue. Finally there is the zip line. You will have to climb the ladder, grab the wire, hook your feet over it and make your way to the other end where you will jump down onto the platform and sprint to the finish." Minho stated. My brain was spinning. I had trained hard to prepare, but I had no idea if I would be prepared for this. 12 minutes isn't a lot of time to do a course this length with such complex obstacles.
"Holy shit," Jungkook whispered next to me.
"I know right," I whispered back, grabbing his hand, giving it a gentle squeeze to make sure he knew I was there for him.
"We will be repeating the course three times, with a ten minute break in between each repetition to allow you to catch your breath. The record for this course is eight minutes and twenty-seven seconds, held by our very own lieutenant, Kim Namjoon. Let's see if any of you have it in you to beat it and dethrone him. Dorms 11 and 12, head to the start and stretch. The rest of you can have a seat on the stands on the other side of the course." Minho said as he made his way to the watch tower located in the centre of the course, he would have a full view of the entire course from one place, and keep a keen eye on all of us.
Namjoon held the record for this course? My head spun at the thought. I knew he was one of the best for his age, which is why he became a lieutenant so young, but I had no idea he was that good. If he held the record, that would mean he would definitely be here to watch, to make sure no one broke the record, which I'm sure he is immensely proud of. Anxiety immediately started coursing through my veins at the thought of him watching us intently, keeping track of everyone to make sure his pride and position on the metaphorical throne remained intact.
Jungkook and I took our seats with the rest of the dorm when a man came over and handed us each a coloured bib to put on.
"This allows us to differentiate between the different dorms and pull you out if you run out of time," he stated simply before walking away.
"Purple, my favourite colour," Jungkook smiled as he pulled his bib over his head. I was glad to see him smiling again, even if it was because of something so small. I smiled to myself and pulled my bib over my head too.
We sat back and watched the soldiers line up at the start line. Just as they were getting ready to start, a line of lieutenants made their way onto the stands in front of us, making sure each of them had a decent view. There was probably 7 or 8 of them in total; all chatting and laughing with each other while they settled in. I wasn't able to get a good look at who was among them as there were too many soldiers sanding and walking around the stand between me and them.
A cold shiver took over my body and I shuddered where I sat in the full sunshine. I would have to figure out how to fix this nervous twitch, so I stood up and jumped on the spot to try and distract myself before stretching a few small muscles to keep my mind occupied.
From where the lieutenants stood, it would be easier to spot prospective soldiers for their platoon now that we were all colour coded. Minho blew a whistle, and the soldiers started running down the course. There were 5 lines of each obstacle to allow a larger number of soldiers to complete the obstacle at once. By the time the next wave had started, some of the first group were already over the halfway mark, while others had struggled and fallen far behind.
Once everyone had settled in and sat down, I took a second to scan the group of lieutenants in front of us and came across a pair of hazel eyes staring back at me. Kim Namjoon was here, and he knew I was too meaning I had absolutely no room for error today.
He was leaning back in his seat, with his arm draped over the empty seat beside him; his head tilted to the side so he could see me, but not make it obvious to the other lieutenants. Once his eyes met mine, he quickly averted his gaze back to the course in front of us.
Everyone seated on the stands watched intently as the soldiers made their way through the various obstacles. We all watched as a soldier tripped and fell face first into the dust on the 200 meter straight, causing the lieutenants to erupt in laughter. I felt bad for the guy, I couldn't even imagine how embarrassing it must have been, especially in front of your prospective lieutenants.
"Poor guy," I muttered under my breath.
"It's time for us to go Liz," Jungkook stood up, motioning towards the sergeant in charge of our dorm, who was motioning for us to follow him. I stood up and jumped up and down again, trying to loosen my muscles even further.
"Are you sure you're ready for this?" I queried Jungkook as we made our way to the start.
"I think I'll be fine, it's all body weight stuff, so I should be able to manage," he sent me a wink over his shoulder. Even with all his cuts and bruises, he was still a sight to behold.I counted my lucky stars to have been lucky enough to sleep with a man such as him.
Once we reached the start, I started to stretch again, making sure that all of my muscles were loose and warm, ready to tackle the task ahead of me. The whistle blew, and the wave in front of us started running down the course. The butterflies in my stomach were out of control now, I felt like I could throw up. I took a few deep breaths trying to calm my nerves. I closed my eyes, trying to focus on the course, not on the man sitting on the stands watching our every move. When I opened my eyes, it was as if I had tunnel vision. I couldn't see anything or anyone around me but the course in front of me.
Jungkook stood next to me, and someone I recognised, but did not know the name of, stood on the other side. I would have to make sure I got in front of the weaker soldiers, to make sure they wouldn't hold me up at any of the obstacles. The only problem was that I hadn't been able to figure out who the weak ones were yet, we hadn't done any form of physical training, so I would have to try and be in front of all of them to be certain.
I bent over slightly behind the starting line, readying myself for the whistle. Some soldiers were still chatting among themselves while we waited, but I never lost my focus. When the whistle went, I took off. My feet pounding onto the ground beneath me, pulling me to the front of the group. One advantage of being small is that I was light on my feet, so I created a gap between myself and the rest of my dorm in no time.
