Jungkook and I were soon surrounded by the rest of the soldiers from our dorm so we stood up, making more room on the stairs for people to file out of the building behind us.
"Alright, privates, follow me, I will be taking you around the camp. Please keep up and don't dawdle, we haven't got time for people to fall behind. We have a lot of ground to cover." a man walked up to the group from along the pathway. He didn't bother introducing himself so i assumed we would never encounter him again. He was probably part of the administration team that were in charge of the comings and goings of the camp.
We started at our dorm and walked down the path between the other dorms that stood on the southern border of the camp. As we walked I admired each building as we passed them, taking in the various states of the buildings. Some were slightly newer than others and some looked to be in serious states of disrepair. Most of the buildings had at least one broken window and another that was cracked. It was quite surprising, considering the way men in Korea took pride in being part of the military; one would assume they would treat their infrastructure with the same respect. As we walked past dorm 12, my stomach sank. I was exceptionally anxious about getting in, and I planned on doing whatever it took to accomplish that. As we walked past the front entrance, the hair on my arms stood on end. I glanced at the door and saw it swing open, revealing Lieutenant Kim. He was still dressed in his formal uniform, his medals glistening in the sunlight. I made brief eye contact with him as we passed and I swallowed the lump in my throat that his intense gaze summoned. He seemed to stare straight into my soul and read all of my thoughts in an instant. I knew that wasn't possible, but I quickly averted my eyes anyway.
"As you can see, the dorms are on the south side of the camp, they are all placed on either side of this path that runs along the length of the south boundary. Dorm 1 is the furthest southeast and your dorm is the furthest southwest." our guide shouted from the front of the group, ensuring that everyone was able to hear him. I returned my attention to him to listen to what he had to say. When we reached the end of the path, we walked in the direction of the reception building.
"As you all know, this is the administration building. Should you have any problems, you will come here and the receptionist will guide you to the correct administrative officer to sort out your issue. Please do not be afraid to seek any help should you need it. There are psychologists on site everyday, from eight to five. Mental health is exceptionally important in the field, we can't have soldiers going rogue because they aren't able to handle the job." The guide said as we stopped in front of the reception door. It was a relief to know that mental health was taken so seriously here, it is often overlooked which can cause more issues than what it's worth.
Our guide led us down the pathway once again. It was a path I hadn't been along, so I had no idea where he was taking us. We walked along the side of the administration building and when we reached the end, a large, wooden obstacle course came into view. It seemed to have a few lanes so that multiple soldiers could complete it at once. I couldn't see everything from where we were standing but as we got closer I could make out a climbing wall, up and unders and a mud crawl. It looked like it would be tough, but I knew I would enjoy it. I loved physical training that involved more than running around. This requires physical strength, agility and speed. As we continued down the path, I noticed a running track next to the obstacle course. It wasn't long, probably about 500 metres, which was more than enough to keep your cardio levels up. In the middle of the track was a small outdoor gym. There was equipment spread out on the grass. There was a bench press, squat rack and a few loose weights scattered on various racks and stands. I could get a good workout done on that amount of equipment.
"This is the physical training side of the camp. The track and outdoor gym are open for use at all times of the day, so feel free to use it at your leisure. The obstacle course, however, is only for use when training with your lieutenants or sergeants. Should you be caught using it without supervision, you will be reprimanded accordingly." Our guide stated as he came to a stop on the grass between the track and the obstacle course. "There are two obstacle courses, the one on your left is the agility course and there is one to the south of it, which is the physical course. The agility course tests your ability to move through, over and under obstructions that you may face in the field. The physical course tests your speed and endurance. I won't go into detail about what your training will consist of, I will leave that joy to your lieutenants and sergeants."
