The sniper range was long, at least five hundred metres, which isn't surprising seeing as snipers were a long distance specialisation. The other groups were making their way out as we made our way in. The range was open air, which I enjoyed. It made the shot more calculated, having to take wind into consideration when pulling the trigger. I enjoyed the challenge. There were a few clouds scattered around the sky, but they were hardly moving, so the wind wouldn't be too much of an issue. As much as I loved the challenge, I didn't want to make a fool of myself on the first day of training.
I walked into the tent at the end of the range with Jungkook by my side. There were trunks spread out across the floor, all of which were full of state of the art snipers and ammunition. The instructors stood at the opposite side of the tent from where we had entered. I looked down the range to see hay bales with person-shaped targets placed on them. There were a few people replacing the paper targets with new ones after the last group.
"Welcome to the most difficult part of your training, privates. I am Kim Seokjin and this is my team. We are all experienced snipers, the best in our field," the tall man in front stated. He was harsh and stern, but his features were soft and subtle. He had dark hair that hung on his forehead, and brown eyes. His lips were plump and shaped like a heart, it was kinda cute. "You will all have an opportunity to shoot today, but not all of you will have the opportunity to shoot again. After today, most of you will be cut from the sniper roster and will not be allowed to step back into this tent. We want the best of the best. Not some boy who played with a toy gun when he was a kid and thinks he's a marksman. You have one opportunity to impress me and my team, use it wisely. Suit up." His voice was unwavering, making sure everyone understood him clearly. One opportunity was not enough for me. I had held a sniper once, and it was a disaster.
"Chulsoon here will give you an example of what we are expecting from you today," Seokjin said as he gestured to one of his team members standing behind him.
Chulsoon made his way to the range, sniper in hand. He was already suited up, bulletproof vest, helmet and goggles. He lay on the mat that had been set up on the floor, leaning the barrel of the gun on a sandbag in front of him.
"Wind is 7km/h in a northwesterly direction," a man behind a computer in the tent said as Chulsoon got comfortable.
"Roger," Chulsoon mumbled as he put his eye to the scope. It was a few seconds before he pulled the trigger, but when he did, he hit the target without a problem. He fired another round, hitting it once again. From what I could see, he had hit the target in the head as well as the chest, right through where the heart would be.
"You will have 5 rounds each, you have to hit the target in the head as well as the chest or abdomen, not both. You will see there are red spots on the target, that is what you need to aim for. Dorm 14, you're up first," Seokjin said as he helped Chulsoon to his feet.
Each dorm went one at a time, so our dorm would be last. It was a disadvantage because the instructors would be tired and aggravated by the time it was our turn to train. The lieutenants and deputies had arrived once dorm 14 were loading their snipers. They stood with Seokjin and his team on the side of the range; monitoring the soldiers carefully. I would imagine this is one of the most important aspects to them. It would bode well for them if they had a platoon full of trained snipers.
Each soldier's mat was numbered, if your number was called, you had to stand up, return your sniper to the trunk and join the rest of the group in the tent; and you're taken off the roster. In dorm 14, only 4 soldiers out of 32 had made it to the end and had an opportunity to continue their training. I didn't like those odds.
In the rest of the dorms, a total of 16 soldiers had been kept on the roster. It was our turn. The lieutenants had rotated a few times since we had started, they were too far away to see who was there, and I didn't want to look carefully at who was there because I didn't want to know if Namjoon had arrived, it would throw me off.
