Michelle had arrived early at Spaeth Designs, since she had decided to catch the bus out to Woodside at 6:30AM. She didn't trust being able to get a Boro Taxi or Uber on time, so she got up shortly after dawn to get ready for work, then made the 50 minute bus trip on her first day just in case she had to go through some kind of orientation or meeting with her immediate supervisor before being given an assignment to work on at the company.
She had packed her lunch in case there wasn't anywhere to go for lunch or anyone to eat with, and as she rode the bus, she couldn't help feel like she was back in middle school once again, including the same familiar first day butterflies. All Michelle knew was the name of the HR person she had been in contact with a few times and would probably have to find their office once she arrived at the company, so she could be given further instructions on what their expectations were for her as an intern.
As she stepped off the bus at her final stop, it took a few minutes until she reached the door of the main office, her stomach all of a sudden tied in knots as she walked over to the receptionist.
"Good morning, my name is Michelle Stevenson and I'm here to start my first day as an intern."
"Good morning Michelle," the woman greeted her warmly. "I'm Gwen Johansson. Let me call our Human Resources Director Angela Hildebrand, and she can take you on a short tour and get you settled."
"Thank you so much," Michelle replied, feeling a bit more at ease, since Angela was the HR person she'd had previous contact with over the phone.
She took in the feel and the decor of the space as she waited and in a few minutes Angela Hildebrand walked into the receptionist area to greet her.
"Good morning Michelle! It's so nice to finally meet you in person," she said as she shook Michelle's hand. "Welcome to Spaeth Design Company! We're so happy to have you here and I'm sure you'll enjoy your short time with us. Did you have a hard time finding the place?"
"No, I had taken the bus out here over the weekend to familiarize myself with the neighborhood and to see how the trip would actually take from my apartment."
"Ahhh I see...and how long was the bus ride?"
"Almost an hour."
"Oh my, that's a long ride first thing in the morning," Angela smiled as she led Michelle down a hallway past some other offices.
"Yes ma'am, there's a lot of stops between Ridgewood and here."
"Please...call me Angela," she said, as she invited Michelle to have a seat in her office. "Now let's see about getting you familiar with our operations here and give you an idea of what you're in for."
"That would be great Angela. I'm ready for whatever the job may be. I'm here to learn and to contribute as much as I can, wherever you decide to put me."
"I like to hear that. Caroline Richards said you're one of her go-getters. She said you always go above and beyond, so I know you'll fit right in while you're here. Now first, I'll take you on a short tour and introduce you to some of our department heads and a few of the employees, then we'll get you settled into where you'll be working for the time being. Your immediate supervisor is Matt Fiorina and he can tell you more about the current projects his department is currently working on. I'm certain you'll be able to jump right in once he gets you started."
