"Mum?"
"Shawn? What's wrong?" Karen asked, hearing the panic in her son's voice over the phone.
"Mum, it's Michelle...oh God..."
"What's wrong Shawn? What's happened?"
"Mum, Michelle was in a horrible car accident earlier this evening...a twenty car pileup on I-95 when she was on her way back from Boston after closing on her house. I'm standing outside the waiting room at the trauma center in Boston right now, but there's so many other people being taken care of from that accident, the waiting room is packed with family members. They haven't said anything yet about what's going on with her or how badly she's injured. My God, I can't lose her mum! I can't lose her! What if she's so badly injured the doctors can't save her? She can't die mum, I can't lose her! What would I do? Oh my God I can't lose her!" he rasped, desperation apparent in his voice as he began to cry, feeling as helpless as a child.
"Shawn...Shawn...listen to me. Shhhh...babe, now calm down and listen to me. The EMS personnel give the first medical aid and then when they get to the trauma center, the doctors and nurses have to triage the most severe cases first after they're assessed. The ones who are least injured get taken care of as doctors or surgeons can get to them depending on their injuries. Usually in major accidents like this, extra personnel might even be called in so patients get as much immediate attention as the hospital can offer. The medical staff has to assess each injury and do tests and CAT scans and x-rays which take some time, so they aren't going to talk to anyone until they get definite answers to give to the families who are waiting to hear about their loved ones. The only people who would have already been told any news at this point would be those poor families if they had a loved one that died in the accident. So let's look at this positively, ok? Michelle got medical treatment as soon as EMS got her out of the car and she made it to the hospital which means she's in the best place she can be right now. Those doctors and nurses are doing their utmost to take care of her and get her whatever care she needs until they completely assess the extent of her injuries and then they'll come talk to you when they have more concrete answers to give you. They won't say anything until they know for sure."
"I know, but if someone could just say something...ANYTHING! Like is she conscious or is she breathing on her own or can she move her arms and legs...anything! I feel so damn helpless and I can't even sit for 2 seconds. I feel like I could throw up right now from being so worried about her," he replied, wiping his eyes with his sleeve as he paced outside the hospital doors.
"Are you with anyone else? Did anyone call her family in Boston or Montreal to let them know what's happened?"
"Yeah, her best friend Jane is here. She was called first because she was in Michelle's phone contacts as her In Case of Emergency person, so then Jane called me and Chelle's brother. We've just been waiting for any kind of update because her brother wants to be able to pass on whatever information we get from a doctor or nurse about what's going on before he calls their parents or grandmother, although I think he needs to tell their grandmother in person. I mean she's 89 years old and this kind of thing could give her a heart attack. She and Michelle are very close and this will devastate her unless he delivers the information gently and hopefully with some positive news to share."
