Dev is walking in the hallway of the hospital as she just finished her rounds when an emergency alert started sounding in the hallways.
"Code blue level 1, lobby, main entrance! Code blue level 1, lobby, main entrance!"
"Shit." Dev said.
She quickly ran to the hospital's lobby to attend to that patient. She saw a couple of resident doctors already heading their way to the emergency room so she followed them.
"Man, mid-30s, doc." Sabi nung isang resident.
Dev sighed for a quick second. She knows that men are more at risk for cardiac arrest than women and that only means that this guy's life, right here is totally in danger.
She stood at the foot of the bed as she gives instructions to everyone inside and in exchange receives reports about the patient and what really happened to him.
"Push 1 millimeter of epinephrine." Dev said and one of the residents did what she said.
After that, she instructed 2 residents and 2 nurses to line up for the CPR. She calmly instructed them to switch for the CPR, the same time she is also very alert about what the people inside are doing. She may not be the one acting for it, but the responsibility of being the team leader for code blue emergencies is very huge and can sometimes be so overwhelming. She has to take charge of everything and has to be the strongest and most stable person inside the emergency room.
"We pushed 1 millimeter of epinephrine to the patient, gave him 4 sets of 120 chest compressions for 20 minutes and injected an IV to him." Dev stated the summary of what they did to the patient. "Any other suggestions or solutions?"
Everyone shook their heads except one of the nurses who is still giving the patient some CPR.
"Let's finish this rounds of CPR. Check his pulse, his breathing, and his pupils." She said.
The resident doctor next to her did what she said and sighed when he found no signs of life. Dev took a deep breath before speaking again.
"End of code. Time of death," She paused and looked at the clock inside the room. "11:23am."
The other doctors and nurses inside started moving and attending to the patient while Dev walked out of the room. May doktor na rin naman dun na kumakausap sa pamilya nung pasyente but it's a thing for Dev to always talk to her patients' family, regardless of the outcome of what their team did.
"Kamusta po ang asawa ko, doc?" Tanong nung babae, kasama niya pa ang anak nila na umiiyak sa gilid.
Dev sighed, "I'm so sorry, ma'am. We did everything we could." She said and the wife started crying. She soothe her back to try and ease the pain she's feeling right now. "I'm really sorry, ma'am. Our condolences to your family." She said and nodded at the other doctor, telling him to take charge, then she went to her office.
When she went inside, Bianca and Ry are there, as well as Vaughnn. She didn't say anything and just sat straight on her office chair.
"Hey, are you okay?" Vaughnn asked and stood beside her.
Dev bit her lower lip, "I lost a patient again." She said and it didn't go unnoticed to the three of them when a lone tear escaped her eye.
"It's okay, Dev. C'mon, it's not your fault. We know you did everything." Bianca said and soothed her back.
"Cheer up, Dev. We're here. It's not and will never be your fault." Ry said as she also soothe Dev's back.
Between the three of them, Dev is the one who gets into this kind of situations the most. Bianca is an opthalmologist while Ryanne is a radiologist so it is very rare and almost impossible for them to have a patient in a life and death situation, as compared to Dev who almost have her life revolve around the fear of losing another patient.
