Time passed. A nurse had been in to check up on her and left again. I decided to speak up.
'Nath?'
'Hmm?' he hummed in reply.
'If you had something planned tonight you can still go and do it you know. I don't want to be stopping you,' I said. He shifted, sitting up and I followed likewise.
'I mean... All it was, was this market I found. I thought you might like it... We can still go if you want to?' he suggested. Even after I'd forgotten all about it, he was still keen to take me out? The thought shocked me. I widened my eyes, stumbling for an answer, glance switching between him and the bed.
'You can stay here if you want. Please do. Just thought it might be a nice little get-away... But there are other times of course,'
Other times – he really did want to do this. He wouldn't have suggested "other times" otherwise. I sighed. I had been in the hospital all day. And it didn't look like she was going to be changing much in the next hour. So I nodded.
'Yeah. We can go,' I said. A wide grin spread across his face.
'Great. It's a bit out so I can go and call a taxi?' he said, standing up. I nodded and he went to leave the room.
'Be back in... 5?' he said. I grinned at him and he ran out. I was once again alone with my thoughts. And for once I wasn't thinking pessimistically. He'd looked so happy when he left the room. Did it really mean that much to him? Did he...? I tried to stop myself from thinking it but couldn't. Did he... like me? The idea shocked me. The prospect of being liked by someone was almost a fantasy of mine I never expected. And so I decided not to believe it.
Five minutes, later, as he'd promised, he came back through the door.
'On their way. Be there in 15,' he said, sitting back down next to me. I smiled over at him and nodded. Then looked back down at my clothes.
'It's not formal is it? Do I need to get changed?'
He laughed and shook his head.
'You look beautiful,' he said, with a bit of a jokey tone to the point where I couldn't tell whether he was being serious or joking.
Moments later he received a text that the taxi was waiting so we left the room, telling the nurses that we'd be back, and headed on out to the taxi
