I felt someone nudging me but I didn't move. Then I felt someone tug at my hair. This all seemed very familiar. I opened my eyes to see no one but Nathan, with my head leant on his shoulder. It was quite dark now.
'I'm sure I've felt that sequence before,' I said quietly. He laughed. 'Where's everyone gone?' I asked.
'They left ages ago. You were kinda in your own world and fell asleep on me,' he explained to me, smiling a little.
'Sorry...' I apologised. What was I thinking? Falling asleep on someone. Let alone him! He probably thought I was weird. No, not weird, mad.
However, he laughed a little bit. I screwed my eyebrows – why was he laughing?
'It's okay. Partly my fault as well...' he trailed off. I raised an eyebrow at him, urging him to elaborate. 'I er... Put my arm around you so I guess it kind of encouraged it,' he said, looking down at his knees. It was then that I'd realised that his arm was still resting around the back of my shoulders. I smiled a little and looked down onto the table. My ice cream was now a melted yellow liquid lying in the bowl.
'Time?' I asked. He checked his watch, but kept his arm around my shoulder.
'Four,' he said. I jumped off the sofa.
'Four!? I promised Nessy I'd be back for lunch!' I cried. What had I done!?
'Don't worry, I told Sophia to tell her. I thought she might worry,' he said, smiling at me. I mirrored, slowly.
'Thanks,' I said. He shrugged.
'No problem,' he replied. Then he stood up.
'We should get back now though. Your Dad might start to worry,' he said. I nodded after stretching. I then picked my bag up and linked arms with Nathan and we left the place and headed to the promenade.
It wasn't quite night time yet but an orange hue had fallen over the landscape, with the sunset beaming at us, which made the walk somewhat, and annoyingly, romantic slightly. He had put his arm around me and we were walking quite close together. We were silent for half the way home. And it was nice like that. Although I'd had the whole afternoon, I now had a new set of thoughts to think about and sort out as I always do.
A while after, Nathan decided to speak up.
'I er... I was wondering... How come you're so close with your sister?' he asked. I sighed and gave him my 'isn't-it-obvious' look. He shook his head.
'No, I'm mean I know a few people who live with one parent, myself being one of them, but we're not as close with our siblings as you two are I've noticed?' he explained. I shrugged and nodded.
'I don't really know what it is but she seems to be overly dependent on the people she's close to, like me. We don't think it's any illness or anything as she was completely healthy when she was born but she has good days and bad. So I don't get a lot of time to myself,' I said. He nodded.
'So it's quite a hard life then?' he asked me. I shrugged.
'No. I don't complain. I love Nessy. She's my sister and the only one I've got since Mum left,' I replied.
'What about your friends?' he asked.
'Pfft... What friends? I have no friends. I'm a complete loner,' I told him truthfully, but in a scornful way so he hopefully wouldn't think much of it.
'Oi! What about me!? And Sophia! And the others!?' he retorted, playfully. I smiled a little. Did he really consider us friends?
'If you're prepared for me to call you friends,' I said. He nodded.
'Of course we are! What else would we be?' he asked rhetorically. That thought rose within me, making me feel happy. I'd never had a proper friend. Of course when I was younger I had the few people I'd hang around with at school but we were never close. And now I had people who considered me as friends.
We then got to the road and we hailed a taxi as it was still quite far away from our hotel. We got into the taxi and sat in silence throughout the whole journey as it's usually rather awkward talking about stuff when there was a third party listening in. Although Nathan did somehow find my hand and grasped it with his own, by interlacing our fingers. I looked up at him and he looked directly back at me and smiled. I smiled back and leant against his body as he pressed his lips to the top of my head. It wasn't really a romantic gesture but it was rather intimate for what we were, but it felt quite nice just being there in his arms. The presence of his hand in mine made me feel comfortable, and as if I didn't have to worry about a thing. I sighed inaudibly, happily.
We stayed like that for the whole journey back and finally got to the hotel. We paid the driver 50-50 and the driver drove off. Nathan was still holding my hand as we walked into the hotel. He however changed the way he held me hand to normally, which still meant just as much to me.
'Where do you want to go now?' Nathan asked me.
'Room. I need to go see Nessy,' I said. He nodded. We walked over and into the lift together and pressed the button for the top floor. No music was running in the lift, unusually. We got to the top floor and left. We stopped at a point where we had to part ways.
'I guess I'll see you tonight?' he said. I nodded. He then pulled me in for a hug then let go. I watched him walk away for a bit before finding the energy to retreat back to my own room. As I left, I felt a little emptier than what I'd felt with Nathan. It was as if he'd filled some sort of hole in my life whenever he was around. It was weird.
I opened the door to our room and Nessy suddenly jumped on me.
'Lola!' she cried. I smiled.
'Nessy!' I said, hugging her back.
'I was a big girl today! I got in the big pool all by myself!' she said, grinning proudly.
'All by yourself!? Wow you're such a big girl now Nessy!' I said, picking her up, knowing that Rose or someone would have helped her as well, but I didn't want to spoil the moment as she rarely recognised her achievements, let alone be proud of them. She beamed.
So the evening went on. We had tea, I helped out with the mini disco and then retired to the guys. I went to bed at quarter to 11 that night, dreaming of the good events that happened.
