(y/n)'s pov

No one's gonna notice, I thought. This is fine, no one's gonna notice.

I quietly took out a snack from my bag when suddenly, my friend Emma came behind me. Damnit.

"Hi, (y/n)!" she said as she stood over the table that was surrounded by books. "What snacks you got there?"

"Nothing you would like," I lied, trying to discreetly hide my food behind my backpack. But Ray, who was also apparently hiding in the shadows came forward as well. It's like these people memorize when I'm about to have a study session alone, and they proceed to come at the worse times.

"Pocky," he stated, looking at the box. "Nah, Emma loves those."

I sighed. When was the last time I was at least able to enjoy my school breaks by myself, better yet, without sharing my snacks with half the school?

"You know what guys, just have the whole thing. I'll just-" I said standing up when Emma blocked my path. She was now holding the container of chocolate-covered biscuits when her eyes lit up. Oh no, I thought.

"Why don't we play the Pocky game?" she suggested. Ray and I looked at each other, and to her like she was crazy.

"The what?" I asked. I feel like I have heard of it, but I wasn't sure. Emma then took my hand and led me out my little corner in the library, as Ray followed. "What the hell is the Pocky game?"

Emma, Ray, and I were now with our other friends in the Student Center. Since it was study hour, not a lot of people were here. It was pretty quiet, which I enjoyed. "You don't know it?" Emma inquired.

"It's simple really. The Pocky game is where one person eats one end of the stick, and the other one munches on the other end. The object of the game is to keep going till the other person pulls away," Gilda explained. I nodded, even though I had no idea what I was agreeing to.

"So it's just a modernized version of Lady and the Tramp?" I asked as Norman nodded. "But you have to wait till the opponent surrenders?"

"Mhm, that's pretty much it," Emma confirmed. "So should we try?"

"Sure, let's do it then," Ray said, which led me to say yes as well. This doesn't seem that hard, and at least I'll have probably half of a Pocky to myself.

"(y/n), since it was originally your food, why don't you go first?" Emma said, looking at me. "Go on, you get the first choice."

"Uh, alright," I said.  "Who do I pick?"

Everyone murmured around me, discussing who should go first. They all looked at each other, before deciding on someone. "I'll go," Ray said monotonously, and for some reason, Norman and Emma made some sort of eye communication before nodding. It was kind of suspicious.

He glanced at me, and I looked back. I refuse to lose against him. I must have made some sort of negative expression because he replied,

"What, are you scared I'll beat you?" to which I shook my head.

"Okay, now that that's settled. Let the first round begin!" Emma said. Ray and I sat across from each other on a cafeteria table.

"Good luck (y/n)," he said, as I picked a random Pocky stick. They were all identical so it was not like it really mattered. "You'll need it."

"Please, let's see who's the one who'll be eating their words," I replied, as I held the treat between us. Ray bit one side, as I followed. The game has started.

Emma, Norman, and the rest of our friends watched as we slowly ate the stick. I kept my eyes trained on the chocolate, and not on Ray, who I could tell was watching my every move. He carefully adjusted his position so he could rest his chin in his hand.

We were probably an inch away when I stopped. He didn't back out the entire time, and it seemed like he even cared about winning as well, which was a problem.

Suddenly, Ray snapped the biscuit in half with his teeth. It caught me off guard, and before I knew it, his lips met mine.

For there I knew the real meaning behind the Pocky game.

The point of the game wasn't for the other one to surrender but to eventually meet at the end.

We separated quickly, and I looked down to wipe away some of the dust from the table when suddenly I felt him reach over to wipe the side of my mouth with his thumb.

"You had crumbs on your lip," he muttered. The rest of our friends kind of left the two of us together, which made me think they planned this all along. "And I'm sorry if I surprised you."

"It's alright," I reassured, even though it really wasn't. I could feel my heart race a million times per minute and the faint taste of bittersweet chocolate in my mouth. "It was just for a game anyway."

"Really?" Ray asked, making me look at him. "It's funny because you didn't really treat it as one."

"And?" I answered, standing up. All I wanted was to leave and somehow forget this embarrassment I had thrown myself into. I even lost too! "You're the one breaking it in two to end it swiftly. Seems like you got impatient to win."

"That's right, I was," he answered, as we walked out the doors. He smiled as he turned toward me so I could face him.

"Because then I could kiss you before anyone else had the chance."
