Since he was not given a proper burial, Mark's unbound soul could not properly move on to the afterlife and was also vulnerable to Yama, the Gatekeeper of Hell who sought untethered souls. Mark managed to convince Piper of his plight and together they set about avenging Mark's death; first by alerting Andy to the gang leader responsible and then informing Mark's mother of her son's passing so she could give his body the proper burial required.
Piper and Mark had grown quite close during this time and fallen for one another, which was made all the more bittersweet by them not being able to touch or be together. In the end, Mark told Piper he wished they'd had a chance and she agreed, before he disappeared forever with his father into the afterlife.
