"sisters who happen to be witches not witches who happen to be sisters"
The first season of Charmed was a sleeper hit for the WB Network (now The CW), taking in 10 million viewers per episode. The network ordered a full twenty-two episode season after just two episodes had aired. The internet, still in its infancy, was also set ablaze by the phenomenal response to the show, with numerous fan sites popping up overnight.
At first, the show struggled to grab the attention of the studio execs as they didn't believe a story about three roommates sharing a place in Seattle who become witches would capture the public. It wasn't until the concept was changed from roommates to sisters that the entire project gained wings, leading to the show's famous mantra above.
The show was dramatic, campy and fun with plenty of amazing moments during this first season. The best episodes are the ones where family is the focus or where we get to discover the rich history of the Halliwell line.
As sisters, these characters were compelling and complex, each one struggling with her own place within the family whilst simultaneously trying to be who she believes herself to be. Each one brought something special to the table, their own brand of magic that augmented the sisterhood ten fold.
From Prue's strength to Piper's vulnerability and Phoebe's zeal, the Halliwell sisters cast a spell upon viewers that would last for 8 seasons and forever be one of the most charming, nostalgic series to ever grace our screens.
