Details:

A shadowy demon that resembled a billowing cloud of ink, The Shadow was a wicked creature that could possess good beings and corrupt their souls with evil, forcing them to act and behave violently.

It was attracted to the nexus beneath Halliwell Manor in the mid-to-late 70's. The Shadow attempted to infect the nexus on the night of an earthquake, which had presumably opened the nexus and afforded the demon its opportunity. He scared a young Phoebe Halliwell in the basement and she ran and told her Grams.

Penny was not able to vanquish the demon but succeeded in banishing it into the nexus itself with a spell,  imprisoning it forever

Penny was not able to vanquish the demon but succeeded in banishing it into the nexus itself with a spell,  imprisoning it forever.  She then taught the spell to the girls as a nursery rhyme. Little Prue and Piper didn't believe Phoebe's wild tale of the spooky monster, which she called "the woogyman",  and so they barely remembered the rhyme. Phoebe, however, would remember it by heart for the rest of her life.

Decades later, the city was shaken by yet another earthquake which messed with some of the house's utilities, causing Prue much anxiety as she was being forced to host a dinner party that night for her boss and an architecture professor, Beth Whittlesey, who was obsessed with the Manor.  Piper had offered to cook the meal and calmed Prue by suggesting that she could have it made at Quake if need be.

The gasman arrived to check out a strange smell in the basement. The older girls teased Phoebe about her ongoing fear of the basement and she tried to make them believe how scary that night was but they still didn't take her seriously and went about their day.
