A sisterhood of three witches who are the living culmination of the magic passed down within the Warren Family Line. Their arrival was foretold by their shared ancestor,  Melinda Warren, a 17th Century witch of immense power who was burned at the stake during the Salem Witch Trials.  

Before she died, Melinda vowed that each generation of Warren Witches would grow stronger and stronger, reaching a crescendo with the birth of three sisters who would be the most powerful good witches in all the world... 

They would be known as The Charmed Ones

San Francisco sisters Prue, Piper and Phoebe Halliwell are direct descendants of Melinda Warren and the sisters of the prophecy come to pass. Together, they possessed the strongest good magic the world had ever known called The Power of Three, rooted in their sisterly bond. 

Their exceptional magic is not meant for personal gain and should instead be used in the service of others; to protect the innocent and vanquish evil. The symbol of this power is the Triquetra —  which is a representation of three independent powers working as one. 

Individually, each sister also possessed a special power of her own — 

— Prue, the eldest sister, received the power to move objects with her mind.

— Piper, the middle sister, received the power to stop time; allowing her to freeze other beings and objects by slowing their molecules down.

— Phoebe, the youngest sister, received the power to see the into the future (or the past), allowing her to have psychic visions of possible future events that she and her sisters were meant to avert or prepare for.

Like all witches, the Halliwell sisters were born with their individual powers, yet by the time they'd grown into adulthood they had absolutely no knowledge or familiarity to the world of magic and regarded themselves as a "normal", mundane family.

This was because as children, their powers were bound by their grandmother Penny (or "Grams") in order to keep them safe from a warlock who had uncovered their great destiny and therefore sought their magic for himself. 

Once Phoebe was born and the set was complete, Grams cast a spell to not only bind the sisters' powers, but one that also completely erased their memories of any and all things magical, essentially turning them into mortals.  

And so the three sisters lived ordinary lives like you and I, and as adults they had all drifted apart, living very separate, disconnected lives. This would change after their Grams' death and the estranged sisters all moved back in to their childhood home. 

Phoebe discovered the Book of Shadows on that fateful first night together in the Manor and she unwittingly cast the spell that would awaken their magic once more. 

The Charmed Ones were reborn; now the most powerful witches in the world were also young, vibrant and capable women of the nineties trying to find their place and purpose in the world, each juggling careers, dating and family dynamics with destiny, danger and demons, in order to save the world from evil on a weekly basis.
