One year later
"Hello gran'pa Eddy. What you doing?" Little 3 year-old Lynx asked the man that had been raising her for the past year. She called him grandpa because she was confused that Daniel did it but other people didn't. So she also called him grandpa, but Edmund didn't mind. He had been raising her the same way he was raising Daniel. To him they were both his grandchildren. Edmund tried to learn her as much as he could. Something that wasn't that hard, Lynx was very smart for just 3 years old. She loved to learn and she was like a sponge for every single bit of information. Daniel, or as Lynx called him, Danny had been trying to teach as much as he could about just common knowledge like talking. His grandfather was teaching her about how to fix things whereas Danny thought her how to climb trees or just talk and play. Lynx could easily have a conversation, not that she could pronounce all the words but they could talk about easy things.
Edmund was in the attic repairing stuff. He was a retired ministry official but he still worked as a repairman on the side. Not because he had to but he liked to do it. Edmund loved to do stuff with his hands, make and fix things. "I'm fixing a revealer. It is supposed to reveal hidden ink but it is not working very well. It does reveal ink but the letters are in complete disorder. Do you want to help me fix it?"
Lynx nodded enthusiastically. She would spent a lot of time at the attic. Sometimes just watching her grandfather repair things or read, at least tries to. There was a library in the attic. Lynx would just sit and tried to understand the words by looking at pictures. She went over to the worktable and Edmund lifted her up on the chair next to him. Edmund began explaining how the magical artefact worked and how he was going to fix it. Lynx listened intendedly. She didn't understand half of the stuff he said but that didn't matter to her. She wasn't able to do magic yet, sometimes a bit accidental but nothing much, so she couldn't help fix it but she wanted to be as prepared as possible to also fix things.
It was time for lunch when Edmund and Lynx were done. Well, mainly Edmund, Lynx just handed him tools and she looked him working. Lynx was in her animagus form running down the hall when she passed the study she saw Danny crouching over a cauldron with several strange looking ingredients. Daniel didn't go to Hogwarts. He was home-schooled and both Lynx and Daniel wouldn't want it any other way. Lynx was only with them for about a year but they were family.
Of course she had not forgotten her family before she ran away. Well forgotten is a big word, she was very little at the time so she's not able to remember most of the stuff but Edmund and Daniel sometimes talk about the Potters or Sirius Black or Remus Lupin. Edmund used to be a friend of James Potter's father, Fleamont. Sometimes when they would meet over summer the boys would be there. That's how he had a couple of stories about Lynx' father and his friends back when they were teeenagers.
Lynx creeped onto her paws into the study and sneaked up behind the oblivious boy that was basically her brother. Just when he putted the final ingredient into the potion she jumped on his lap. Daniel shrieked in surprise.
Lynx transformed back into her human form and she was squealing and laughing. Not much later Daniel joined her in the laughing while huggning her tight.
"Come on Stribor! What's up with you and scaring me?" Daniel asked while laughing. Stribor was a nickname Danny had come to give Lynx since it's one of the stars in the Lynx constellation. When he found out that the girl was named after the starsign instead of the animal he immediately tried to find out everything about it.
Edmund looked fondly at the two children. Daniel and Lynx got along really well, despite the age difference. If someone would see them, you would probably think they were siblings. Edmund decided it was time for lunch. "Children, it's time for lunch!"
Both immediately ooked up and darted for the dining room. Food could take their mind of anything.
