Chapter Thirty Eight
It was a quiet car ride home with Charlie's music from her airpods louder than the radio from Alec's car. I know how bad he wanted to talk about what happened at lunch today but he knew Charlie was one to not be trusted.
"You work tonight?" Alec asked and I looked over at him before shaking my head.
"Ricky is trying to get me for next month," I bit down on my lip before looking out the window.
"I can text him, tell him I can train you this week on the days I work so you won't have to when you start working," Alec wanted to talk, I saw it on his face.
"I'm really tired today, I don't think much training will stick," I wanted to shut my eyes and pretend today never happened.
"Charlie," Alec looked in his rearview mirror and Charlie didn't move, "she can't hear shit so I'm going to say this. You can't do this to me right now, I thought we shared everything that night. You're distancing yourself again like before. I can't lose you again, not after I just got you back," Alec looked over at me before the road.
"We'll talk about this later," I muttered.
"When?" he turned down the street.
"When I can finally feel like I can speak," I pulled my feet up and hugged them tight.
Alec parked his car and unlocked the doors before turning around and looking at Charlie, "get out, I need to take Kallie to train at Ricky's."
Charlie rolled her eyes, "Whatever," before leaving.
Alec pulled the car out of the drive before I could even get the chance to think about leaving.
"So I was thinking, you hang out with me while I fix cars, and look hot doing it," he smiled before grabbing my hand as he drove.
It felt like I hadn't lost him all that time, that we experienced falling in love and weren't so broken but then reality hit in and I felt the pain all over again. I was still broken except it got worse over the past weeks.
I pulled his hand to my chest and closed my eyes, "I am so grateful for you Alec," I whispered.
"Talk to me, open your eyes and look at me babe," he said it like that was easy for me to do.
"I'm afraid if I open my eyes you'll be gone and this will all be just a dream. I'm not ready to wake up from this dream," I felt the tears fall down my cheeks.
"You're not in a dream Kailen, you're in the car with me. I'm here, I'm right here," he tightened his hand on mine and I kissed his hand before resting my head on the headrest.
I opened my eyes and looked forward before my phone went off.
I released his hand in search of where I put it.
I grabbed it from my zipped bookbag and answered once seeing my mom called.
Alec placed his hand on my thigh and I bit my lip realizing how much I missed his touch.
"Hey Kallie, Matt called me and wanted me to let you know that we as a family will be having a meeting once Alec's off of work. He said that it was something to do with what Alec told him about at the hospital. I can't make it because I am working the night shift but I still wanted to let you know. He seemed to still want to do it which doesn't make much sense but whatever. I'm mad at him still anyways so it really doesn't matter. Anyways I love you I need to get back to work. I'll see you later honey!"
I hung up realizing I didn't have much to say before looking back outside the window.
"Who was that?" Alec looked at me and I shook my head.
