The sun started to go down, and it was time for the boardwalk. I was super excited. Hestia and I were going to go to the little boardwalk amusement park which had a bunch of cool stuff like a long flume, roller coaster, a house of mirrors, and a ferris wheel.
However, Hestia wanted to save the rides for last, so we went shopping. And let me tell you, I really don't like shopping. Clothes shopping, shoe shopping, room shopping, and even food shopping. I would rather go somewhere fun, like bungee jumping or sky diving, You could say I was a thrill seeker.
"Oh, how about we look in there, they seem to have some cute clothes." Hestia said walking into the shop not even waiting for my answer.
"Ugh." I sighed following her reluctantly. I wandered through the isles of clothes until I found Hestia admiring a dress that had bright warm colors on it.
She turned to me and held the dress up to me. "You would look cute in this." She said. "If you ever wore a dress." She was right, I rarely ever wore dresses, only on the rarest occasion, like a fancy dinner, would I ever where a dress. In fact I only owned one dress, and it was the same dark blue of my eyes.
"Hestia, do we have to shop?" I whined. "You know I could care less about shopping. I would rather go back in the ocean then stand here watching you look at clothes that I'll probably never wear."
"Jamie, you can't just wear shorts and a t-shirt all the time. You're are really pretty, dressing nice won't hide that beauty like your worn out t-shirts do." Hestia said taking out a flowered blouse.
I rolled my eyes already hearing this speech multiple times before. I could actually recite the whole thing. 'You would do more with your hair instead of letting it lay on your shoulder like limp spaghetti.' or my personal favorite, 'Why don't you hang out with your friends more, sometimes I think you're a hermit,' As much as I loved Hestia, she tried to hard to get me to be a normal teenager, when I really didn't want to be. I never dressed up, I never did my hair, I rarely put on makeup, and I barely ever hung out with my friends outside of school.
I snapped out of my trance, and looked to Hestia who seemed to be finishing her speech. "Sometimes, I wonder if I should just send you to camp, at least there you could get some social interaction." She said. This was new.
"What camp are you talking about?" I asked cocking my head to the side a bit just like a dog does when it's confused.
Hestia froze from what she was doing, which was checking the price tag on a pair of strappy sandals. She then looked at me. "Umm, it's a summer camp your father wants me to send you too. It's a place for kids like you." She said not giving me much information.
"Kids like me?" I asked feeling a bit hurt on how she said it.
"Kids with dyslexia and ADHD." She said not making eye contact with me. I looked down at my flip flops. It hurt reminding me about my problems. It was hard enough at school, not being able to read the textbooks or the board, not being able to concentrate, and not being able to learn. And another problem was that everyone at school was scared of me. The few friends I had said that I let off a vibe that made everyone fear me. They said it was my eyes. Sophia, my one friend, said that my look could kill an army general.
"So you want me to go to a camp?" I asked hurt that Hestia wanted to get rid of me.
"No," Hestia said finally looking at me. "I don't want you to go anywhere, you are like a sister to me, if it were up to me, I would have you live me with the rest of your life, but your father has different plans for you. The one being that you go to this camp."
Anger was rising up in my body. "Since when does my father have a say in anything I do?" I asked in a loud voice. Hestia flinched. "It's not like he's around to teach me, or care for me, he has no right to tell me to leave the only family I care about." My voice was getting steadily louder, and when I looked around everyone in the store had left, leaving only the cashier who had a look of pure fear on his face. Hestia seemed a bit frightened too.
