Anita and Sophie were sitting on the grey couch in the living room at Anita's house, watching a reality show together on a large flatscreen tv that was mounted to a wall.
It was Sunday evening. They were supposed to be back at their college. Unfortunately, Anita's mom was called in to work. She was going to turn it down but she needed the extra money. Living as a widow was not cheap.
Anita's mom promised to have them both back on campus by Monday afternoon. They would miss a class or two but they did not mind. They did not miss class often.
Anita was having trouble paying attention to the tv. She was too busy being paranoid about Loki. She was worried about what he would do when he saw her again. He was likely angry after she had fled from him again.
"Anita?" said Sophie.
She was torn out of her thoughts. "Yeah?"
"Are you okay? You look really zoned out."
"Oh, uh, no, I'm not zoned out. I was just thinking about something."
"Are you thinking about your dad?"
The mention of her father caught her off guard. "No. Why would you ask that?"
"Well, you're back home. This is where, you know, it happened. I just wanted to make sure you're okay."
"I'm fine. I'm completely fine. Don't worry. I'm not thinking about him. I'm just thinking about...school stuff."
"Are you sure? You can talk to me if you need to. I'm here."
"I said I'm fine, Sophie."
"Alright, alright. Sorry. Geesh."
She realized that she had said that a little more hostile than she had intended to.
"I'm sorry."
"No, I am. I shouldn't have brought it up. I know how much it bothers you."
The sound of the doorbell radiated through the whole house.
"I'll go get it," said Anita, standing up.
She went to the front door and looked out the peephole. On the porch stood a man in a police uniform. Bewildered, she opened the door.
"Uh, hi. Can I help you?"
"Are you Anita Torsney?" asked the dark skinned officer in a deep voice.
She nodded. "Yes. Why?"
"I'm very sorry to inform you of this but your mother has been sent to the hospital."
She felt a sinking feeling in her stomach. "W-What?"
"She was assaulted on her way home from work. She's in the hospital being treated for her injuries."
She was speechless for a moment. "Oh my god." She turned around and ran back to the living room to Sophie. "Sophie, we need to go to the hospital now. My mom is in the hospital."
"What?! What happened?" asked Sophie.
"l'll tell you later. We need to go. Now. Find an Uber fast."
"Okay. I'm on it."
As Sophie searched for an Uber, Anita thought frantically. Was her mom okay? How bad was the attack on her? Were her injuries severe? Was there a chance that she would not make it? She was panicking. Her heart would not stop pounding. Her breathing would not slow. Her body would not stop shaking. She hoped desperately that her mom was alright.

Two Hours Earlier...
Anita's mom, Samantha Torsney, had just left the small grocery store that she was employed at. It was about 8pm. She was walking through the parking lot, towards her car. There was no one else around. She was thinking to herself about what she was going to make for dinner. Perhaps a chicken caesar salad. She had the ingredients at home.
All of the sudden, with no warning, she felt a hit in the back of her head. It had so much force that it sent her falling over, landing on her knees. She was completely baffled. She looked behind her, searching for the culprit that had knocked her down. She saw nothing. When she looked back in front of her, she was startled. A person stood in front of her. A man. She could not see his face because it was dark. His outfit was strange. He looked like someone from a renaissance fair.
Before she could say a word to him, his fist connected with her cheek. She fell over completely this time, landing on her back. The punch had been so powerful, it knocked one of her teeth out. She spat it out along with a viscous mixture of saliva and blood. She was certain that she was being jumped.
She sat up and frantically began to plead. "Wait, I'll give you whatever you want. Just stop. Plea-"
He kicked her in the face before she could finish, breaking her nose and knocking her back on her back. He did it again, harder this time. She spat out more blood and cried out in pain. The boots that he wore were very hard. To Samantha, it felt like they were made of rocks.
"Please stop," she gasped. "Please. I'll give you anything. I'll-"
He kicked her in the side, silencing her. The pain was horrendous. She rolled into a ball and began to sob. Another kick came, this time in her back. Then another, this time her stomach. He continued kicking her over and over and over again, ignoring her screams and pleads and cries. She attempted to get up several times but every time she did, she was knocked back down by either a punch or a kick. She soon gave up and laid down on the cold sidewalk as he continued to beat her senselessly.
After a couple of minutes, he stopped. She believed that he was finally done. She thought he would at long last rob her and be on his way. She was wrong.
He got down on one knee and grabbed her neck with both hands. Then, he squeezed tightly. He held back although he did have the urge to use all of his strength and break her neck. She grabbed at his hands and looked deep into his green eyes, her blue eyes pleading for him to stop. But he didn't. He was enjoying her suffering very much.
To finish her off, he slammed the back of her head down on the cement multiple times until she stopped moving. He smiled and let go of her.
Satisfied, he stood and left.
This would show her.
