Anita sat in the passenger's side of her mom's new car. She had bought it after her old one was not found after the night that Anita had went to the ball with Sophie, unaware of the fact that it was totaled in a forest.

The whole ride home had been silent. Neither of them spoke. Anita stared out the window blankly, many thoughts racing across her mind. She felt terrible for leaving college but also, relieved.

During the drive on, she had received another text from Caspian. It read:

Hello? Are you okay?

She ignored it.

Her mother took her eyes off the road and glanced at her every so often, a look of concern across her face. She did not know what was going on with her daughter but she was terribly worried.

"Anita. You need to tell me what's going on," she said in a calm, even tone. "I...I drove all the way here from home. The least you can do is tell me what is wrong. Why did you decide to just pack up and leave college today?"

Anita did not reply. She did not even look over at her mother.

"Don't ignore me," she said, raising her voice a bit. "You have been acting strange the past few weeks. When we talk, you always sound so sad and preoccupied. What happened to you?"

"Nothing," she mumbled.

"Please. I know it's not nothing. What has been going on? Is it because of your falling out with Sophie? Or the night when those guys stole my car from you? Did they do something to you?"

"No, that's not why. Nothing happened."

"Tell me the truth."

She sighed, growing irritated by her mother's questions. "Let's just say that if I didn't leave, something bad was going to happen. Something really bad. I couldn't risk it."

Her mother looked at her with concern. "Something bad?"

"I don't want to talk about it, okay? Can we just drop it?"

"Fine," her mother replied. "I'll drop it for now. But this conversation isn't over."

After a few hours, they arrived at their house. As soon as Anita's mom had finished parking in the driveway, Anita opened her door, grabbed her things out of the trunk and began to make her way to the front door.

"Anita, wait! Wait for me! I need to talk to you about something before we go inside!" called her mother frantically as she began to get out.

Afraid she was going to begin hounding her with questions again, she unlocked the front door with her house key and hurried inside. As she walked briskly towards her room, she froze. She saw something that confused her.

Steven, her mother's body guard, sat on the couch in the sitting room, wearing only jeans. No shirt. His raven black hair appeared damp, as if he had just been in the shower.

He looked at her. His eyes widened in surprise. He perked up.

"Anita. Hey."

She did not respond to his greeting. She was speechless.

Her mother ran up behind her. She had a look across her face like she had just been caught doing something illegal.

"I wanted you to wait so I could explain."

She walked over to Steven and stood beside him.

"Steven and I...well...we're-"

"Don't say it," Anita said in a low voice. "Don't say that."

She looked between the two of them. She could feel anger begin to brew inside of her stomach and chest.

"You...you can't do this. You can't do this, Mom."

"I'm sorry. I've been meaning to tell you but I kept putting it off."

Her body began to tremble. "How long has this been going on?"

"Since the beginning of December."

She smiled bitterly. "Wow. Wow, wow." She should have known. She had sensed some sort of connection between the two of them but she had told herself it was nothing and that she was just overthinking.

"Please don't be upset. I just-"

"No!" Anita shouted. "I will be fucking upset! Dad died a few years ago and you're already trying to replace him? You said you would never date again! You said that after he died! So what in the fuck changed?!"

"Watch your mouth!"

She laughed wildly and took a few steps closer towards her mom. "No, I want to know what the fuck changed, Mom?! You said there was no one out there that was as great as him!"

"Don't you dare talk to me that way. Now look, I understand that you are upset but you will not be disrespectful."

She shook her head. "I can't believe you."

"He is dead, Anita! Okay? He's dead! He's never coming back. I was originally planning to stay single after he passed. God, I was going to because I did not want to risk ever feeling pain and grief like I did ever again. But then, I met Steven. He was there for me when I needed it. He protects me and the house."

"He's supposed to because he's a fucking body guard that I found to protect you. Not for you to FUCK him."

"You are really pushing it right now. He is a good man just like how your father was a good man!"

Tears were running down her cheeks. She was so angry that she was crying. "I can't believe you. I don't even know what to say right now. I don't. I'm so disappointed in you. I can't even stand to look at you right now. I can't even stand being in the same fucking room with you right now. You are dead to me right now. You are fucking dead."

"Enough! How dare you talk to me that way after what I just did for you! Bringing you home when you could still be in college, building a future.  If anyone should be disappointed, it's me!"

Anita nodded. " Fuck you."

Her jaw dropped. "What the hell did you just say to me?"

"I said F-U-C-K Y-O-U. Fuck you."

She marched out of the room, bags in her hands.

"Go to your room and don't come out until you're ready to apologize!"

When she reached her bedroom, she entered, shut her door hard and locked it. She dropped her bags on the floor and stood still for a moment, looking around at her dark room. Then, she broke down. She began to knock things over and throw things around. She made her room a complete mess. After that, she fell onto her bed face first and cried into the soft blankets.
