"It's going to be okay. Just relax," said Sophie, taking Anita's hand and holding it tightly.

The two of them sat in uncomfortable blue chairs in an empty waiting area in the hospital. They were waiting for the doctor that was treating Anita's mother to tell them what was going on and how she was doing.

Anita tried to calm herself down by watching the fish swim around in a large rectangular fish tank that was in the middle of the room. It was not helping much. She was so worried, she felt like she was going to vomit. "I can't believe this is happening."

She hoped the doctor would come soon because waiting to know if her mother was going to be okay was very nerve-racking.

About a half hour later, an average height Asian man in blue scrubs entered the room. He looked at Anita and Sophie and began to approach them. Anita stood.

"Are you here for Samantha Torsney?" asked the man.

She nodded. "Yes. I am. I'm her daughter."

He stopped in front of her and held out a hand for her to shake. "I'm Dr. Kin. I performed the surgery on your mother."

She didn't take his hand, too focused on wanting to know the status of her mother. "Is she okay? Please tell me she's going to be okay."

He put his hand down and sighed. "Well, she came in severely beaten. Whoever did this to her really had it out for her. But the good news is I was able to take care of her injuries."

"So she's going to be okay?"

"Yes, I believe so. But she had to be placed in a medically induced coma due to a brain injury she received."

"A coma? When will she wake up?"

"Well, her brain needs time to heal. Fortunately, the brain injury is not very severe. I should be able to wake her up within a couple of weeks at the earliest."

The nervousness that Anita had been feeling inside for the past few hours died down a little bit. Although her mother would have to spend some time in the hospital, at least she was going to be okay.

"Can I see her?"

"She's being taken to a room now. Once she's settled, you can see her. I'll come back to get you."

"Okay. And thank you. Thank you so much," she said.

"Of course."

He walked away. Anita returned to her seat and sat down. She sighed.

"See? I told you everything was going to be fine," said Sophie cheerfully.

Although Dr. Kin had said that she was going to be alright, Anita was still scared for her mom. What if there were complications? Or what if the coma lasted much longer than the doctors thought it would?

Dr. Kin had returned after about an hour to take Anita to her mother's room. They stood in an elevator side by side, waiting to get off on the eighth floor. Sophie stayed in the waiting room. Anita wanted to be alone when she went to the room. Just her and her mom.

They walked down the pristine white halls until they reached the room number 817.

"I have to warn you, she isn't in the best shape right now," said Dr. Kin.

He opened the door and stepped in. She followed. When she saw her mom, she covered her mouth in shock.

"Oh my god."

She was covered in wires, hooked up to multiple machines. Her head had a bandage wrapped around it. Her left arm was in a cast. An oxygen mask was over her nose and mouth. She was pale. Her eyes were closed. She looked dreadful.
