Anita awoke from her sleep. She had finally managed to get some rest. It was not good rest in the slightest, though. She looked over at her clock on her nightstand by her bed. It read 8:32am. She looked over at the chair that her mother had been sleeping in. She was not there. She must have gotten up to change her clothes or get some breakfast. Or perhaps both.

Her body seemed to ache even more and her spirits felt like they had shattered into many minuscule pieces. She could not cry anymore although she wanted to.

The door to her bedroom opened. Her mother stood in the doorway.

"Good morning. How are you feeling?"

Anita sat up and rubbed the crust out of her tired, red eyes. "I'm okay."

"I made us some breakfast. Bacon and eggs and waffles," she said, trying to sound cheerful.

"Thanks mom. But I'm not really hungry. I'm still kind of uneasy. After last night."

The small smile that had been on her mother's face faded away. She nodded. "Okay. That's alright. I understand."

There was an awkward silence between the two of them. Her mother broke the silence when she cleared her throat.

"Well, if you change your mind, it's in the kitchen. I'll let you rest some more. Let me know if you need anything, okay?"

Anita nodded. Her mother closed the door back gently. Anita put her face in her hands and sighed.

"This can't be happening to me."

She soon became lost in her thoughts again. Why was this happening to her? Out of every human on Earth, why did it have to be her? She was not the best person but she certainly did not deserve what Loki was putting her through.

Her bedroom door opened and her mother entered. She held her white smart phone in her hand.

"Honey, it's Sophie. She said she tried calling you but it kept going straight to voicemail. She wants to talk to you."

Anita had been so focused on what had happened the previous night that she had not realized that she did not have her phone. She assumed she lost it while trying to escape from Loki.

Her mother handed her the phone. She put it up to her ear.

"Hello?"

"What the hell, Anita! Why did you ditch me last night?"

"I didn't! I was...I was looking for you! I thought you were just going to the bathroom!"

"I did! But I guess I must have passed out. I woke up on the bathroom floor. When I went back to the ball, you were gone. I looked in the parking lot but your mom's car was gone. You didn't even let me know you were leaving. Why would you abandon me like that? I had to catch an Uber home, which wasn't cheap by the way. And the Uber driver was a total creep. Where did you go?"

Anita's mom could not hear what Sophie said but she could hear that she was yelling.

"Is everything okay?" she mouthed to Anita.

Anita nodded. She motioned for her mother to leave the room. Hesitantly, she did, closing the door gently.

"I'm really sorry. I just had to go."

"Why?"

"I...I-"

"If you didn't want to go to the ball anymore, you could've just said so instead of leaving me."

"No, I did want to go! I just...something happened."

"What happened?"

Anita's mind raced. "I-I saw someone I knew and I didn't want to run into him. So I left. I, uh, I tried to find you first and then I left."
