Chapter Sixty-Three

It was the evening now. Dinner time had just ended. It had been tasty again, tortilla soup and a small Caesar salad. Now, it was recreation time. Surprisingly, Anita was allowed to wander free as long as she stayed on her floor. The only catch was orderlies were scattered throughout the floor, keeping watch over everyone. There were multiple activities she could do. There was a game room, an empty room with tables and different board games on each one. There was a music room, a room filled with multiple different instruments, music stands and music books filled with sheet music. Lastly, there was an entertainment room.

While the game room sounded fun, Anita had no one to play anything with. She did not want to play with strangers. The music room also sounded good but she did know how to play any instruments. So, she decided to check out the entertainment room.

She entered the room. It was small. The floors were covered in a dark grey carpet. In the center of the room stood a tv. It was old and bulky. On top of it sat a black dvd player. Behind it was a bookcase. Instead of being filled with books, it was filled with DVDs. Around the tv was several chairs. Sitting in the chair on the far right was a girl. Anita approached her. As she grew closer, she realized that she was the girl from earlier who had went crazy on the orderly. Trinity.

She stopped when she was standing beside her. Now able to see the front of her, she noticed that she was wearing a white straight jacket. Oddly, she did not acknowledge Anita at all. She had to have seen her.

"Excuse me. Do you mind if I sit here?" she asked, pointing to the chair beside Trinity.

For a moment, the girl did not speak. Then, in a quiet, monotone voice, she said, "I don't care."

Taking that as a yes, Anita sat down beside her. She awkwardly folded her hands in her lap and looked straight ahead at the tv. A black and white show, likely from the fifties or sixties, was playing on it.

"What is this?" Anita asked.

After a silent moment, Trinity replied. "Some old show. It's honestly boring. I can't put something else on though because, as you can see..." she wiggled slightly in the straight jacket.

"They put you in that?"

"What do you think?"

Anita understood that what she had done to the orderly earlier was wrong. However, this was a bit extreme. "Well, I could put something else on."

Trinity did not answer. She just looked straight at the screen, looking miserable. Anita stood, went over to the DVD filled bookcase and began to look through them. Most of the DVDs were old, lame shows and movies. Suddenly, she saw one that caught her eye. "This is a good one."

She took the DVD off of the shelf, walked over to the DVD player, took the DVD that was playing previously out, and put it in. She returned to her seat.

"I used to love watching this show with my dad. He always was a big fan of old black and white shows. Most of them were boring but this one was actually good."

The DVD began to play. An episode started called Sally Speaks.

"What is this?" asked Trinity.

"It's called The Dawn Zone. It's like an anthology show. Each episode is a different story."

They both fell silent as they watched the tv. Quickly, they both were immersed in the strange, sci-fi story. Before either of them knew it, the episode ended and the credits began to roll.

"That was actually kind of good," said Trinity.

"Kind of good? C'mon, it was great!"

"Let's watch another episode. Maybe I'll change my mind."

Anita smiled. It felt like she had not done that in forever. "Alright."

They continued watching the show. They got through about three more episodes before an orderly entered the room.

"Well, guess recreation time is over," said Anita.

"Yeah," said Trinity, standing up. "I guess so."

Anita stood also. Trinity began to walk to the exit.

"Wanna do the same thing tomorrow?" Anita asked. She actually had a good time. She had not really talked to someone like this since her and Sophie were friends. It felt nice. It felt...normal. She felt like a normal girl for once.

Trinity looked back at her with a blank expression. "I guess."

She would take that as a yes.

Over the next week and a half, Anita did basically the same procedure as when she first arrived. The only new thing that was added to her schedule was therapy sessions which she found unnecessary. But she played along. Maybe if she played along, she could get out of the asylum faster.

During recreation time, she would watch The Dawn Zone with Trinity. It became a routine. At first it was a bit awkward since Trinity was very standoffish. But slowly but surely, she began to warm up to Anita.

It was recreation time again. Like usual, Anita met Trinity in the entertainment room. They took their seats and played The Dawn Zone.

"This is one of my favorite episodes. It's about some guy who has a dummy that comes to life," said Anita.

"Sounds good. Can't wait to see what happens," Trinity responded.

They watched the episode. Every so often, they would comment on things and laugh. Too soon, the episode ended. Anita paused it as the credits began to roll.

"What do you think?"

"That was really good, actually. I've never really been into black and white shows but this show is cool!"

"Told you so. It's like a certified hood classic."

Trinity giggled. "Don't ever say that again."

Anita laughed with her. "Sorry. I had to."

Trinity beamed. "What did you do to end up in here? You seem so...not crazy."

Anita's demeanor darkened slightly. "I'm not crazy. I don't even have any mental issues, at least not anything serious enough to be here."

"How did you end up in here then?"

Anita sighed. She wanted to tell the truth but if she did, it would likely scare her new friend away. She decided to keep things short and leave out major details. "Basically, I was framed for a crime I didn't commit. A bad crime. I didn't do it, I swear on my life I didn't."

"Huh. That's funny. I was framed for a crime I didn't commit also."

Anita raised an eyebrow. "What kind of crime?"

Trinity did not seem to want to tell her, based on her body language. But she did. "Murder."

Hearing that word sent shivers down her spine. She did not expect her to say something so awful. "Murder?"

"Don't look at me like that. I didn't kill anyone. Like I said, I was framed."

"How did that happen? Who framed you?"

"It's a long story," Trinity said. "I know, that's a cliché thing to say. But it is."

"Well...we still have like an hour left before we have to go back to our rooms. Tell me."

"You wouldn't believe me."

Anita chuckled. "Trust me, I will believe you. Nothing surprises me anymore."

After a moment of thinking, Trinity nodded. "Alright. I'll tell you."
