Anita and Sophie were at a convention center where the dance competition was being held. They were backstage with their team, going over their dance.
A group of girls suddenly approached them. They all wore tight black shorts that were basically briefs and tight dark blue crop tops with a sweat emoji on the chest. Anita knew who they were immediately. The Sweaty Sweethearts.
"Well, if it isn't The Dancing Dummies," said one of the girls.
Anita recognized her. "Angelica?" said Anita.
The girl, Angelica, smiled at her with all of her perfectly white teeth. "Anita! I thought you quit dancing years ago."
"I did but one of our team members got injured. So I'm back."
"Too bad. Oh well. This should make things easier."
"What do you mean easier?"
"Well, you haven't danced in years. You're bound to mess up. Then you and your team don't stand a chance."
"Excuse me?" said Sophie, butting in. "I'll have you know that Anita can dance just as good as she did years ago."
"Right. You can't just get back into dancing and get good again that fast. It will be a miracle if she can even make it through half of the dance without completely screwing up."
"Please. We are going to wipe the floor with you," said Anita.
Angelica laughed and flipped her long blonde hair. "Whatever you say. You might as well give up now. There's no way your team is winning."
"Watch us," said Sophie.
Angelica laughed again. "Ooo, I'm so scared."
"You should be," said Anita.
"The Sweaty Sweethearts are next!" said a woman with a large pair of headphones on and a clipboard in her hands.
Angelica gave Anita, Sophie and their team a huge grin. "Come on, girls. Let's show this team what good dancing looks like." Her and her team sashayed past them. Both teams exchanged vicious glares.
"I hate her so much," said Anita. "Always have."
"I forgot they were competing," said Sophie.
"I remember them being good."
"They're good but they aren't that good. We've got this!"
The audience went silent as Angelica and her team went on. The girls stood still on the black stage, each of them doing different poses, waiting for their song to start. Technologic by Daft Punk began to play. Their dance started out slow and dull but as soon as the beat dropped, it exploded with fast, exciting and naughty moves. As Anita watched she had to admit, it was very impressive. Everyone was in perfect sync. They must have practiced countless times.
When the song ended, the crowd erupted in applause. As the girls left the stage, they jumped up and down while screaming at each other happily. They approached Anita and Sophie once they were backstage again.
"Good luck beating that," said Angelica.
"Please. That will be easy," said Anita.
"You really should just give up. You're not going to beat us..."
Angelica took a step closer to her.
"Your dead dad wouldn't want you to embarrass yourself."
Suddenly overcome with rage, Anita tried to attack her. Sophie held her back.
"You're such a bitch!" shouted Anita.
"Don't listen to her! She's trying to get in your head!" said Sophie.
Anita stopped fighting when she said that. She was right. This was all a trick.
"Get the hell out of my face before I bash yours in," spat Anita.
Angelica cackled. "Break a leg, bitch. Break both of them." She walked away with her team following behind her.
"Are you okay?" asked Sophie.
"I guess so."
"Just calm down. We're up next. Take some deep breaths."
Anita did what her friend recommended and took a few breaths. She felt a little better afterwards.
"This is it. Let's go," said Sophie.
Anita, Sophie and the other girls went on stage. The audience was silent, observing them closely. Anita could make out her mom in the front row. She waved at her. Her mom waved back.
She had to admit, she was a little nervous. She had always had a moderate case of stage fright. She knew though that once she started dancing, it would dissipate. The crowd would fade away.
The girls got into position and waited quietly, as still as statues, waiting for their song, Come On Eileen by Dexys Midnight Runners, to start. When it did, the team broke out in dance, doing various stylish dance moves. They moved swiftly and in just about as much sync as The Sweaty Sweethearts. The crowd went wild. Anita felt on top of the world. A huge smile was across her face as she moved fluidly across the stage with the other girls. She hadn't felt this good in a while.
Come on Eileen, tah-loo-rye-ay...
Come on Eileen, tah-loo-rye-ay...Anita glanced at the audience for a moment when the song slowed down. She caught sight of a figure sitting in the back that caused her heart to race even faster than it already was from the intense dancing. The smile on her face faded away.
Loki waved at her, grinning deviously.
Come on Eileen, tah-loo-rye-ay...
Come on Eileen, tah-loo-rye-ay...The song began to speed back up. Anita was trying to focus on the dance moves but she was too distracted by the fact that Loki was there, watching her every move. She suddenly felt uncomfortable with what she was wearing. She wanted to cover up.
Now I must say more than ever
Things round here have changed...The song was now back to its original tempo. It was almost over. Anita wanted so badly to just run off the stage and hide. She knew she couldn't do that though. She had to finish the dance. She was apprehensive every time she had to do any sort of move that was even remotely sexy, knowing well that Loki was watching her closely. She tried not to look back at him but she couldn't help it. She could feel his eyes all over her.
The dance finally ended and the crowd erupted with applause. Even more than The Sweaty Sweethearts had. All the girls except Anita were squealing with happiness and hugging each other. She was too busy watching Loki. He didn't move. He just watched her silently, unmoving.
"Anita? What are you looking at? Come on!" said Sophie.
She hadn't noticed that her team was leaving the stage.
"Sorry. I'm coming."
As she began to walk off stage, she looked in the back of the room for Loki again. She was disturbed to find that he was gone.
