WHERE THERE'S SMOKE, THERE'S FIRE
...🛶...
BREAKFAST at the Leery house was a full affair for Gail, what with two teenage boarders as well as her own. But as Jen, Jack and Dawson wolfed down their eggs and bacon, Gail couldn't help but notice over her coffee cup that Heather had barely touched her plate "Are you okay, honey?"
"Huh?" Heather blinked, glancing up from where she pushed her fork around the plate "Oh, yeah. Just... tired."
"Up late studying?"
Heather nodded, tucking her hair behind her ear. She'd certainly tried, but no matter what page she attempted to read, her mind drifted to Andie, to watching the phone waiting for it to ring.
"I need some father-son advice." Dawson announced, looking over at his mother and Heather was thankful for the reprieve "What do you do when you know something really bad about someone who's really close to someone you care about? Do you tell the someone that you care about, or do you just try and forget that you know the bad thing?"
Jack and Jen paused their eating to share a look, neither quite understanding Dawson's mouthful of a question.
"How bad is bad?" Gail questioned.
Dawson let put a heavy breath "Let's say 'beyond bad' bad."
"Well, then you have two choices." Gail shrugged "You can either tell the someone that you care about what the someone they really care about has done, or can you go straight to the someone who's done the bad thing and confront them directly in the hopes that they'll do the right thing."
"Wow, dad's got nothing on you."
Jack looked between Heather and Jen with furrowed brows, speaking through a mouthful of breakfast, his cheeks puffed out "Am I the only one who's lost here?"
"Just eat your eggs, Jack." Jen pat his arm in amusement and slight disgust "You need the extra brain power."
Gail looked between her twins "And uh, speaking of your father... I've decided to take the job in Philly. I'm gonna fly down there tomorrow and officially accept, sign the contract, and firm up my plans to relocate."
Heather slowly sat her unused fork down, her stomach churning at the news. Everyone leaves.
"Is this what you really want?" Dawson mumbled.
Gail sighed "Well, that someone that I really care about has done nothing to even remotely suggest he may care about me."
"Excuse me." Heather pushed back from the table "I left a book upstairs."
