INDIAN SUMMER

...🛶...

THE night air around Capeside was stifling, the summer heat lingering despite turning winter and for that reason, Heather had declined her brother's usual movie night invitation with Pacey to lay in the park with Jack and Jen. The three lay atop one of Mrs Ryan's old comforters, hands folded behind their heads as they stared up at the glistening stars. Jack broke the silence from his spot in between the girls "You know, I saw this article in this magazine once, where they put this thing up in the sky, so that the kids studying astronomy could track something during the night, and I think that is it ri—" he pointed upwards before moving his finger further right "or maybe that's it."

"Wait." Jen turned her head to the boy "You expect us to believe there's some sort of giant disco ball orbiting the Earth?"

"Groovy." Heather snorted in amusement.

Jack chuckled "Okay, when you put it like that, it sounds kind of stupid. Maybe we should start thinking about getting out of here."

"I don't think so." Heather denied with a content sigh "Not before the main event."

"We've got the stars, we've got the moonlight." Jen added with lazy smile "It's perfect."

Jack scoffed "Yeah, lying on the grass on a hot Indian Summer night with your gay best friends. That's your definition of purpose?"

Heather smirked as she turned onto her side, propping herself up on her elbow "Suits me."

Jen chuckled and gestured to Heather "A girl could do a lot worse."

"Come on, guys." Jack sighed "I know you both too well. You can't tell me there isn't someone else you'd rather be stargazing with."

"Okay, you got me." Jen sighed dramatically "Matt Damon."

Heather's nose scrunched up "Really?"

"Beside's I was talking more about someone in the realm of oh, say possible?" Jack added "Henry, for instance?"

"The freshman?"

Heather raised an eyebrow at the girl "The freshman who paid $500 just to kiss you."

"You've got to admit it's kind've sweet." Jack pointed out.

"Jack, Jack, Jack, my naive little pet." Jen sighed "It's the sweet ones that you have to watch out for."

Heather blew out a breath "They'll run over you like a Mac Truck."
