Act 2; Scene 16: Colder by the Minute

(The lights go back up and it's extremely bright onstage. Rose is walking quickly, with Virgil and Remus behind her. All of a sudden there's a loud bang and we see a bunch of soldiers run onstage. Then Jeff, Charles, Megan, and Alex stand in front of Rose. We see the Sander's siblings above on the castle's balcony watching everything happen. Charles turns around to the soldiers with an airhorn and blows it. The music starts. The fighting stops, everyone turns around to look at Charles.)

Soldiers: And born of a heartless king
The storm inside her grew
The guns flying, the wind picked up
Her mind grew dark, the cold wind blew

Charles: King Deceit charges Princess Rose of Lightown
With treason, and sentences her to death

Rose: What? No!

(The soldiers begin to rally up to grab her, Rose yells at Virgil and Remus to run, and Rose's necklace starts glowing red and orange.)

Soldiers: Nothing could contain
The voices in her brain

Roman: This wasn't the plan! He tricked us!

Logan: What if they didn't tell Janus...maybe they want revenge!

(Rose runs forward using her powers to get people out of her way. She's trying to find the two general's to stop the mess. Virgil and Remus run, but get separated. Megan is running after Rose, while the rest are trying to get to Remus.)

Soldiers: And the storm raged on
And they were ravaged by the wrath of war
And the wind blew clear
And the storm would grow
Colder by the minute
Colder by the minute

(Remus trips and falls, he cuts up his leg.)

Remus: Keep running Remus, don't stop, don't rest
They're out here somewhere
I can feel the fear in my chest
In my heart, I don't care
I've got to reach them through the storm somehow
Because the one thing that can save us now
Is their love

(Virgil runs downstage and is looking for Rose)

Virgil: Rose

Remus: True love

Virgil: Where are you?

(Virgil and Remus run offstage opposite of each other. The soldiers are all crashing into each other.)

Soldiers: Colder by the minute
Colder by the minute

(Rose emerges from the chaos. She runs to center stage. Her hands are above her face covering herself. People around her start falling backwards. The "wind" starts getting worse. The necklace is glowing orange and red still.)

Rose: Can't run, can't stop, can't breathe
Can't live and I can't die

(Megan is right behind Rose. Rose is too scared to turn around, so she plugs her ears and walks left.)

Megan: Rose, listen!

Rose: Can't hope to fix this mess
Yet somehow still I have to try

Megan: Please surrender

Rose: Breathe, breathe, just breathe
Just find the general

Soldiers: End this war, now

Rose: I've unleashed a monster
I cannot stop the monster

Rose: No harm will come to him

(Rose uses her powers and knocks Megan off her feet, and causes her to slides across the ground. She quickly stands up and runs back over and stands next to Rose. Remus and Virgil run back onstage. Virgil downstage left, Rose center stage, Remus downstage right. The four are standing while the chaos behind them slows down.)

Soldiers: And the residents howl
And they were trapped within the walls of red

Remus: Don't give into the fear

Virgil: Rose

Remus: Don't give into the pain

Virgil: If you can hear my voice, hold on Rose

Remus: True love

Rose: I can't!

Megan: Rose!

(The chaos begins again, and Virgil and Remus run upstage, and bump into each other. They embrace, but they get pulled apart again by soldiers. Rose starts to walk upstage left with Megan following her. The rest of the Hugo siblings follow Megan. The soldiers are fighting each other again. )

Soldiers: And the storm raged on
And her powers tore the town apart!
And all was lost
To her broken heart

(The four gather in a circle on the turntable. The buildings start crashing down. Patton and Roman grab onto each other. Logan and Thomas pull the other two away from the edge.)

Virgil: Remus

Remus: Virgil

Rose: Monster

Megan: Rose

Soldiers: Colder by the minute
Colder by the minute

(Rose runs to centerstage, and Megan comes behind her. Remus and Virgil run to each other, and begin talking to each other trying to figure out where Rose is.)

Megan: Rose! You can't run from us!

Rose: What happened to our deal?
Where is Virgil?

Megan: Virgil! He was following you when he tripped over a tree you caused to fall!

Rose: No...

Megan: I tried to save him, but it was too late.
He had blood from his head
He had no pulse
You lover is dead. Because of you!

(Rose screams and falls to the ground sobbing. Everything freezes except for Virgil, Remus, and the Sander siblings who are gripping onto each other.)

Soldiers: And the wind blew soft
And in her grief, the storm stood still

(Virgil and Remus turn around when they hear the scream and see Rose fall to her knees. They look at each other and Remus puts a hand on Virgil's arm.)

Remus: Virgil?

(Megan unfreezes and pulls out a knife from her dress' pocket. Virgil shoves Remus's arm off of him, and takes a step forward.)

Virgil: Rose?

(Virgil and Rose look at each other and run towards the two girls. The soldiers start moving again and are shoving up against them. Virgil falls down, but Remus keeps running. Megan pulls the knife up and is about to stab the weeping Rose. Remus shoves Megan to the ground and they both fall over. Megan passes out and Remus lays on the ground completely silent. Virgil stands up quickly and runs over to Rose. The music stops. He stands behind her awkwardly. He wants to hug her but is nervous about the deal. He doesn't want Rose to go back to Darktown. His brothers run down to Virgil. He looks at Thomas, and Thomas nods. Virgil kneels down and hugs Rose. She turns around and tries to shove him away.)

Virgil: Rose, stop! It's me!

(She looks up at him and screams. She hugs him and starts sobbing into his arms.)

Rose: But Megan said-

Virgil: Shh...I know. It's okay now.

(Roman, Patton, and Thomas join in on the hug. Logan walks over to join, but hears a gasp. He looks over his shoulder and sees Remus gasping and grabbing his side. Logan also sees a knife next to him.)

Logan: Oh no...

(The group looks up and sees Logan running over to Remus. They all gasp and run over to Remus.)
