Light And Dark: A Musical

Act 2; Scene 8: Monster

(Rose is sitting on the floor crying. Her necklace is glowing red, orange, green, and dark blue. The lights fade out. A spotlight shines on Rose in her cell. She's holding herself while sobbing. She hears Janus yelling once again, I'll be back you little monster. She starts screaming and grabbing at her head.)

Rose: Don't! Please stop, leave me alone!

(She starts crying again and grabbing her arms. The music starts )

Rose: He's finally come, come to do what he always said he'd do 

I can't hide this time like I hid before
The storm is awake, the danger is real
My time's running out, it's your fault, it's your fault
"You will wed Deceit Hugo, you have to promise that."
That's what Dad once said to me
And I realize he was right
All this pain, all this fear started because of me
Is the thing he said, the what I have to do

(The blankets on the bed start floating. Rose looks over at the bed with sad eyes.)

Rose: A monster, were they right?
Has the dark in me finally come to light?
Am I a monster full of rage
Nothing to do but cry and hide?
Or do I let the monster out of the cage?

(The lights come back on. We see Virgil in a cell. The rest of the Sanders brothers walk into the palace looking for Virgil and Rose. Remus is running after Janus.)

All: End this war, bring back the peace
Keep her guarded up
Remus: Don't let harm come to her

(The necklace is glowing dark orange. Now the pillows, the blankets, and the carpet are all floating in the cell. Outside the castle, we hear screaming and crying. Rose looks outside the window. Remus grabs two pieces of paper. He takes over Deceit's view of vision, causing him to see something so horrific he falls to the ground sobbing. Remus runs off.)

Rose: What do I do?
No time for crying now
I've started this mess, gotta stop it somehow
Do I keep on hiding?
How long do I have to?
And will that take the war away
Or only make it growI'm making this world colder
How long can it survive?
Is everyone in danger as long as I'm alive?

(Rose stands up. Her hands start glowing. The Sanders brothers find Virgil in a cell pacing back and forth. Logan pulls out something that looks like a coin. He gets Virge out of the cell and the group starts looking for Rose again.)

Rose: Was I a monster from the start?
How did I end up with this frozen heart?
Bringing destruction to the stage
Caught in a war that I never meant to wageDo I kill the monster?

(The music stops. Remus goes up to Rose's cell. She steps back, clearly terrified.)

Rose: I'm sorry, do what you want.

Remus: I used my powers to distract Deceit. I don't have much time before he realizes what I did. I need to tell you this now or I may never get to again.

Rose: Tell me what exactly...?

Remus: Before your parents died they both wrote you a letter. I needed to give them to you now. If you need help escaping, you know where to find me.

(Remus gives Rose the letters. They both hear Janus screaming. Rose falls to the ground, covering herself. The necklace begins glowing dark orange again.)

Remus: Rose, what did he do to you?

Rose: It wasn't him. I mean, yes he forced me to marry him and that is...traumatic. It...it was my father. 

(Janus yells again for Remus. Remus runs offstage. Rose picks up the letters and reads them.) 

Rose: Dear Rose, Don't mess up. Don't run along with those dykes again. You must wed Deceit Hugo and if you don't, trust me he will force you. You disappointed me very much so while I was alive, but I know you will make me proud. From, Dad.

(She rips the letter in half. She raises her hand and it flies out of the window. She's about to do the same with the other letter, but then opens it instead.)

Rose: Dear Rose, It is mom. I wanted to apologize. You see, you have every right to be angry with me. I wanted to explain myself first. When I was your age, I was told everything I had to do by older men. I grew up learning that whatever the man said was true. When I married your father I didn't think anything of it when he would control me. While I watched you grow up it made me realize that you were doing what I didn't have the courage to do at a very young age. Stick up for what's right. I should've been a better mother, but I will never have that chance again. If I could tell you one thing before I leave it would be, don't lose that strong spirit of yours. Keep sticking up for yourself and who you love. If you don't want to marry Deceit, then don't. No matter what he does to you, don't stop fighting. Love who you want to love, even if it's that Sander boy. I love you my dear, mom. 

(The music starts again. Rose folds up the letter her mom wrote and holds it to her chest for a second. She slowly finds a pocket in her dress and puts it there. Her necklace starts glowing green, red, and orange.) 

Rose: Father, you always wanted me to be quiet
If I die, will anyone know he did?
Mother, what if after I'm gone
The war gets worse and the storm rages on?
No!
I have to stay alive to fix what I've done
Save the world from myself
And bring back the peace

(Rose stands up and walks to the cell bars and stares at it.)

Rose: If I'm a monster then it's true
There's only one thing that's left for me to do
But before I fade to white
I'll do all I can to make things right

(Janus and Remus hear a loud crash and turn around. They see the Sanders and Virgil and Roman start running away.)

Rose: I cannot be a monster

(Thomas runs after Roman and Virgil, while Janus and Remus run after Logan and Patton.)

Rose: I will not be a monster

(Rose raises her hands in the air. Everything starts floating. The necklace is glowing a dark red.)

Rose: Not tonight!

(Rose points her hands to the cell bar. The bars suddenly rip in half. Rose walks out of the cell. The guards try to grab her but she puts her arms out, forcing them to the ground with her telekinesis. There's a loud crash when Rose makes one of the cell bars fall to the ground. Everyone stops in their tracks. Rose runs to the ballroom, hiding in a corner. The lights fade out.)
