Light And Dark: A Musical

Act 1; Scene 11: If I Could Tell Him

(Virgil, Patton, and Logan are on one side of the stage in their house at downstage left, while Rose, Roman, and Thomas are at the castle at downstage right. Rose is holding the flower in her hand.)

Patton: Guys, what are we going to do about Rose?

Virgil: What are you talking about?

Logan: Virgil, you of all people must have noticed it.

Virgil: Again, what are you talking about?

Patton: Well Virge, it's clear you're in love with her. You're always staring at her. That's why we called you up here cause we need to do something about that necklace of hers.

Logan: I've been running some tests with her actually. We realized the color changes depending on her mood.

Virgil: Then why doesn't it glow all the time?

Logan: Because it only glows when she feels an emotion extremely strong. I have the list right here actually.

Patton: Can we see it?

Logan: Yes.

(Logan hands them the list and their side of the stage gets darker, and downstage right lights up)

Roman: So, even Logan doesn't know what it is?

Rose: No, all we know was that it was left by my mother and father.

Thomas: That's weird though, wouldn't you remember them explaining why it glows. Or even how you get it?

Rose: That's exactly what Logan thought, but we ran some tests. It glows depending on what emotion I'm feeling strongly at the moment.

Roman: So that's why it's glowing light blue?

Rose: I guess.

(Downstage left lights up again. Logan and Rose start speaking at the same time.)

Rose and Logan: If it glows red that means anger. Orange is fear, yellow is the need to protect others, green is sadness, light blue is happiness, dark blue is confused, and purple means in love or desire. I/She also have/has telekinesis.

Virgil: That makes sense I guess.

Roman and Patton: Wait, I've noticed something.

Rose and Virgil: What?

Roman and Patton: Whenever Rose is around Virgil, the necklace is always glowing purple or light blue.

Virgil: Wait...really?

Logan: Yes, I have noticed that as well.

Thomas: Oh Rose is in love!

Rose: No I'm not!

Patton: And Virgil gave her a flower! Aww, you guys are the perfect couple.

Virgil: Patton, we're not a couple.

Roman: Oh Rose, you'll finally be our actual sister!

Patton: Not yet anyway.

Rose and Virgil: Look, guys, he/she would never love me anyway! Why would she/he? I've loved her/him all these years and look how far that's gotten us!

(Rose's necklace starts glowing green and purple. Logan, awkwardly, puts a hand on Virgil's shoulder.)

Logan: Virgil, Rose talks very highly of you.

Thomas: Rose, Virgil talks about you all the time!

Virgil and Rose: Really?

*music starts here*

(Downstage right fades out)

Logan: She thinks you're awesome

Virgil: She thinks I'm awesome? Rose?

Patton: Definitely!

Virgil: How?

Logan: Well, she said
"There's nothing like your smile, sort of subtle and perfect and real"
She said
"You never knew how wonderful that smile could make someone feel"
And she knows
Whenever you get bored you scribble stars in the dirt

Patton: And she noticed
That you still go on those walks
And watch the sunset every morning
But she keeps it all inside her head
What she sees she left unsaid
And though she wants to
She can't talk to you
She can't find the way
But she always says

(The lights fade up on Downstage right. We see Rose stand up and holds the flower to her chest while singing. Virgil is looking up at Logan and Patton, with a confused look on his face.)

Rose: If I could tell him
Tell him everything I see
If I could tell him
How he's everything to me
But we're a million worlds apart
And I don't know how I would even start
If I could tell him
If I could tell him

(Downstage left fades out, and we see Rose sit on her bed next to Thomas and Rose.)

Rose: Did he happen to say anything else?

Roman: About you?

Rose: Nevermind, It doesn't really matter anyway

Roman: No, no, no just, no, no he said, he said so many things
I'm just, I'm trying to remember the best ones so, um

Thomas: He thinks you look really pretty, er
It looked pretty cool when you put your hair in a bun

Rose: He does?

Roman: And he wonders how you learned to dance
Like all the rest of the world isn't there
But he keeps it all inside his head
What he sees he leaves unsaid

(Downstage left lights up. Virgil walks to the middle of the stage.)

Virgil: If I could tell her
Tell her everything I see
If I could tell her
How she's everything to me

(Rose walks to the middle of the stage too. The stage starts spinning in a circle like in Hamilton using the turntable, and the two are back to back)

Both: But we're a million worlds apart

Virgil: And I don't know how I would even start
If I could tell her

Rose: If I could tell him
But what do you do when there's this great divide?

Virgil: She just seems so far away

Rose: And what do you do when the distance is too wide?

Virgil: It's like I don't know anything

Rose: And how do you say
I love you

Virgil: I love you

Rose: I love you

(Rose grabs the flower, looks at Thomas and Roman with tears in her eyes. She turns to Virgil, and Virgil turns to her. They aren't in the same room, it seems as if their souls are connecting.)

Both: I love you

Virgil: But we're a million worlds apart

Rose: And I don't know how I would even start

Virgil: If I could tell her

Rose: If I could

(Virgil sits next to Patton who gives him a hug, and Rose walks out with the flower in her hand with Roman and Thomas. The lights fade out on the stage.)
