Act 1; Scene 4: Belle

(Music starts)

(We open up on Lightown 3 years later, when Rose is 19. The town is quiet, and we see Rose dancing quietly around town, looking for the Sander brothers.)

Rose: Little town
It's a quiet kingdom
Every day like the one before
Little town full of little people
Waking up to say

Towns Folk: Bonjour bonjour
Bonjour bonjour bonjour

Rose: There goes the baker with his tray, like always
The same old bread and rolls to sell
Every morning just the same
Since the morning that I was born 
In this small provincial kingdom

Baker: Good morning, Princess Rose

Rose: Good morning, sir!
Have you lost something?

Baker: Well, I believe I have
Problem is, I've, I can't remember what
Oh well, I'm sure it'll come to me
Where you off to?

Rose: To buy six tickets for me and my friends! I hear there's a show playing at the theater!

Baker: Sounds boring

Towns Folk: Look there she goes, that girl is strange, no question
Dazed and distracted, can't you tell?

(Rose starts skipping around)

Towns Folk: Never part of any crowd
'Cause her head's up on some cloud
No denying she's a funny girl that Rose
Bonjour, good day
How is your family?
Bonjour, good day
How is your wife?
I need six eggs
That's too expensive!

Rose: There must be more than this provincial life!

(We see Rose meet up with the Sander boys. She gives all of them hugs, and runs into the theater to grab tickets for the six of them)

Ticker Seller: Ah, If it isn't the only theater lover in the kingdom!
So, where did you run off to this week?

Rose: I went to 'Les Mis'!
It was so heartwrenching! 
Have you got any new places to go?

Ticket Seller: I'm afraid not
But you may re-watch any of the old ones that you'd like

(Rose buys tickets to watch 'Beauty and the Beast' and gives the ticket seller a quick hug)

Rose: Your theatre makes our small corner of the world feel big

Ticket Seller: Bon voyage

(Rose gets the boys and walks into the theater, and the Town Folk talk to each other about the group)

Towns Folk: Look there she goes, that girl is so peculiar
I wonder if she's feeling well
With a dreamy, far-off look
And her nose stuck in a book
What a puzzle to the rest of us is Rose

(The group comes out of the theater, and we see Rose clutching onto Virgil's and Roman's arms)

Rose: Oh, wasn't that amazing?
It's my favorite show because you see
He danced with her love so freely
But he won't discover that he can, until Act 2

Towns Folk: Now it's no wonder that her name means kind
Her spirit has no parallel
But behind that fair facade
I'm afraid she's rather odd
Very different from the rest of us
She's nothing like the rest of us
Yes, different from the rest of us is Rose!

Janus: Look at her, gang
My future wife
Rose is the most beautiful girl in the kingdom
That makes her the best

Megan: But she's so well-read

Alex: And you're so athletically-inclined

Janus: Yes, ever since the war, I felt like I've been missing something
She's the only girl that ever given me that sense of

Charles: Mmm peau rincée?

Janus: I don't know what that means
Right from the moment when I met her, saw her
I said she's gorgeous and I fell
Here in Lightown there's only she
Who is as beautiful as me
So I'm making plans to woo and marry Rose

(Rose looks at the girls fawning over Janus and she rolls her eyes and laughs.)

Women: Look there he goes
Isn't he dreamy?
Monsieur Janus
Oh, he's so cute!
Be still my heart
I'm hardly breathing
He's such a tall, dark, strong, and handsome prince!

(We see Rose give Virgil a smirk and starts dancing with him randomly. She switches between all of the Sander boys dancing with them till the end of the song. Rose's necklace starts glowing light blue, and her pure white clothing shines brightly. The townsfolk is crowding the kingdom going about their daily doings, and we see Janus trying to get through the crowd)

Towns Folk: Bonjour, pardon
Good day, Mais oui!
You call this bacon, what lovely flowers
Some cheese, ten yards, one pound, excuse me I'll get the knife
Please let me through!
This bread, those fish, it's stale, they smell!
Madame's mistaken Well, maybe so

Rose: There must be more than this provincial life!

Janus: Just watch, I'm going to make Rose my wife!

Towns  Folk: Look there she goes the girl is strange but special
A most peculiar mademoiselle!
It's a pity and a sin
She doesn't quite fit in
'Cause she really is a funny girl
A beauty but a funny girl
She really is a funny girl

All: That Rose

(We end with Rose and Virgil in the middle of the stage. Virgil is dipping her.)
