Act 2; Scene 5: Mother Knows Best (Reprise)

(The sun is coming up. Rose is walking in the field where she and Virgil shared their first kiss with the flower in her hair. All of a sudden Janus and Remus corner her.)

Janus: Oh Rose, how are you today?

Rose: I'm fine.

Remus: Janus-

Janus: How about I give you an offer?

Rose: What do you mean?

Janus: Well you want this...war to end. Right?

Rose: Of course, so many people are dying.

Janus: Then marry me.

Rose: What? No thanks.

Janus: What's stopping you, Rose? You don't have anything in Lightown anymore! Sure you have your "friends" here. You could come and see them anytime! All you have to do is marry me, we can have a couple of kids-

Rose: First of all, they're not my "friends". They're my family. Also if it wasn't obvious enough for you, I have Virgil.

*music starts*

Rose: Janus, he loves me!

(Janus comes behind Rose and puts his hands on her shoulders.)

Janus: Loves you?
Please, Rose, that's demented
This is why your parents shouldn't have been so soft!
Rose, this whole romance that you've invented
Just proves you're too naive to be queen
Why would he love you?
Come on now, really!
Look at you, you think that he's impressed?
Don't be a dummy
Come with your love

(Rose shoves Janus.)

Rose: No!

( He gives her a dirty look.)

Janus: No?!
Oh, I see how it is.

(He starts walking toward him slowly while Rose is trying to back away.)

Janus: Rose knows best
Rose's so mature now
Such a clever grown-up Miss
Rose knows best
Fine, if you're so sure now
Go ahead, then give him this

(Janus grabs Rose's crown and throws it on the ground. She looks up at Janus. She turns hysterical. She turns to run away, but Remus grabs her.)

Janus: This is why he's here!
Don't let him deceive you!
Give it to him, watch, you'll see!
Trust me, my dear
That's how fast he'll leave you
I won't say I told you so

(Rose falls to the ground. Remus starts rubbing her back to calm her until Janus gives him a dirty look. Janus stares right at Rose. Rose starts glowing dark red. Janus's eyes turn yellow.)

Janus: No, Rose knows best!
So if he's such a dreamboat
Go and put him to the test
If he's lying
Don't come crying
Janus knows best!

*music stops*

Remus: Janus, what are you doing to her?

Rose: Ok...I'll go with you.

Remus: No, Rose! He's messing with your mind!

Janus: If anyone's messing with her mind, it's Virgil.
She knows that now.

(The stage lights dim out.)
