WAR WAS APPROACHING, AND MAY FERNSBY WAS PROBABLY THE ONLY PERSON DREADING IT. though she had been through it so many times, you would figure she's used to it, only it was the opposite. each time war was a possibility, it scared her more than the last time, because each time it happened again, the more the possibility her and her loved ones would be on the unlucky side.

indistinct chatter was heard around may as she sat on a rock, cleaning guns in the dead of night with murphy, everyone else around them doing the same thing. "everybody ammo up." shaw demanded them with an authoritative tone, knowing it was crucial they do so, "once the shooting starts, it'll take ten minutes for mccreary's reinforcements to arrive, so don't use all your bullets before then."

may looked up to check on murphy, and saw that he was still trying to figure out his new, large gun he got from a couple days prior. she chuckled lightly, "you having fun there?"

murphy stopped pressing the buttons and looked at may, his lips turning upwards into a smile at just the sight of her. he always loved may's personality, in fact, he admired it, because most of her humor was influenced by him. "yeah, well." he paused, and leaned closer so she could hear better, "i think i'd be having a lot more fun if it were just the two of us someplace else."

the young mother couldn't help but feel a blush arose on her cheeks, you'd think the woman would prepare herself for whatever it would be coming out of murphy's mouth, but that never stopped her from blushing. "you mean like that last night?" she scoffed playfully, "give me a break."

murphy shrugged his shoulders carelessly, "well, we might die tomorrow, so, why not?"

die tomorrow, those were two words may fernsby was not interested in hearing. her joyful features dropped at the mention, and grew silent almost immediately. murphy caught on, and realized how may couldn't get when it came to war approaching.

he placed his large gun against the rock he sat on, and placed his hand over hers, stopping her from cleaning guns, "hey." his eyes looked into hers, "i won't let anything happen to you both."

may was quick to shake her head, "you can't guarantee that."

murphy took in a deep breath, before nodding, "you're right, i can't." he gave her hand a squeeze in reassurance, "but i can try, right?"

you would think that wouldn't be something you'd wanna hear on the edge of war, but for may fernsby, it was just what she needed. hearing murphy's reassuring words that he would try his hardest to protect them, was just enough for her.
