"Nini, I don't want you to leave."

"Why, Ricky? This is a huge opportunity for me. I can finally live my dream."

"But-"

"No buts, Ricky. Besides, you know things haven't been the best between us lately. I'm starting to feel like I can't even trust you anymore. You've been hanging out a lot with Lily."

"I'm telling you, she's just a friend!"

"What about all those dates that you bailed on me?"

"I had family issues. My mom's pregnant with Todd, my dad is a walking zombie, and I don't even know anymore!"

"Please, don't leave me alone."

His voice cracked.

"I'm sorry, Ricky, I'm going, and that's that."

When he dropped her off at her door that evening, no kisses. No hugs. No goodbyes.

That weekend, he scrolled through his Instagram, looking at old posts of Nini and him together. After their fight last night, he wasn't sure things would be the same again.

You got a new alert from niniukegirl.

It was a video.

Ricky opened it.

"Hey y'all, this song is dedicated to someone that I really love, but I need to find a way to let them go easily. So, I've decided to take to songwriting, one of my biggest passions. Hope you enjoy."

She began to strum her guitar, and Ricky could already hear the beat of one of the saddest songs he'd ever listened to.

"I've gotta say what's on my mind,
Something about us, doesn't seem right, these days,
Life keeps getting in the way,
And it's just too hard to watch it all slowly fade away,"

Ricky could feel a tear beginning to fall.

"I just don't belong here,
I hope you understand."

For a long time, Ricky knew that Nini was destined to be more than this. She'd always felt out of place in this school, this city.

As she sang the rest of the verses, a memory came back to Ricky. Sad

"Gabriella is literally the queen of breakup songs," Ricky said, chuckling.

"Well, other than Taylor Swift," Nini smiled.

Now she was using that power of breakup songs against him.

"We might find our place in this world someday,
But at least for now,
I've gotta go my own way."

Those words slapped him even harder than that time Randall Carter did in third grade. That time, it was physically painful, but it just took a few ice packs. This one molded a hole in his heart, an empty void.

Even with his phone facedown, Ricky could hear the slight tears in her voice.

This was it. This was the end of Ricky and Nini.

On the day Nini left for YAC, Ricky hurried over on his skateboard as she was loading her trunks into the backseat.

"Nini! Please! Just listen to me!"

"What more is there to say?"

"I know I was wrong. You should leave, because I know you were destined for something greater. You should have fun with your life, forget about me. After all, I'm just a yearbook memory now. But I'll always love you, wherever you are."

Her face softened. "This is why I wanted to leave," she explained. "I didn't want to see you get hurt."

Ricky hugged her and cupped her face in his hands. "Do what's best for you. If that means leaving me, then that's fine."

She gave him a passionate kiss before driving away.

Ricky could feel the tears falling out of the corner of his eyes. "I'll be waiting right here for you when you come home."
