"just friends?" you can lie, lie, lie.

I'm using this to be "happier" and "less dark?" Anyway...here ya go, a Rini senior prom night fanfic...where Ricky has just broken it off with Lily, and Nini decides to ask him to dance, both of them insisting that they're "just friends."

—————

Ricky sighed as he sat on the bleachers, watching his friends dance. He'd just broken it off with Lily yesterday after finding out that she harbored many secrets against him: sabotaging BatB's opening night, cheating on him with some dude from AP class, and those were just a few of them. When he raced to her place, screamed "HOW COULD YOU" in her face, she kept coming up with weak excuses. "Take a chance on me, I'll do it all again, we have the real shit: shared trauma..." that bullshit. He was kind of happy that the whole ordeal was done with, but he also despised this feeling of being lonely and just people-watching.

Ricky looked at Red and Ashlyn, who were looking lost in each other's eyes and so in love. He couldn't remember the last time he felt that way. Not with Lily, not with anyone...

"Hey," someone said, snapping him out of his thoughts. Of course. Nini. Or should he say, Nina?

"Hey, look at that, aren't you supposed to be in a hotel room and railing that dude from calculus...what was his name again...Ah, Raccoon Face?" he responded dryly.

"Very funny," she said. When Ricky properly managed to look at her, he was surprised. Her mascara was running, her dress was crumpled, and she'd ditched her heels for a pair of high-tops. "Let me guess, breakup blues?"

"Honestly, I didn't even want to go. Kourtney made me, except she's drinking too much and flirting with people who aren't even Howie."

"I'm certain that EJ and Gina are attacking each other with their mouths somewhere around here," Ricky said. "Just thank the Lord we're saved from the sight of it."

They were quiet for a minute, listening to the song that was currently playing, Can't Take My Eyes Off You. "Well," Nini began, wiping away the last of her tears, "we're both single, depressed, and look like post-breakup messes right now, so do you want to dance?"

"I'm a mess. Darling, you look perfect tonight," he muttered under his breath.

"What was that?"

"You still look like a prom queen to me, Neens. You always do."

The compliment sent her thoughts scrambling and her cheeks a fine shade of pink. "Do you want to dance or not, and do you ever stop flirting?"

"I'm like my father, we have a sense of irresistible charm to us."

"And the ability to get a woman pregnant at 17," she chuckled humorlessly.

"To be fair, I don't know if birth control existed in the 80s."

"So, you still didn't answer my question. Dance?"

Her outstretched hand looked so inviting to Ricky. Maybe this could take his mind off Lily.

"As friends?"

"Just friends, nothing more."

As his hands found her waist, Nini could feel her breath catch in her throat. She had to keep reminding herself, this...we're just friends. This is a dance, just as friends.

We're just friends, Ricky repeated over and over when he felt her getting extremely close, her body pressed against his. No...we're just friends. Still...I wonder what it would be like to kiss her again...

They didn't know how this happened, but when the next song came on, they weren't on the dance floor, instead in a supply closet, gasping for air in between hot and heavy kisses.

"Just friends?" Ricky asked.

"Just friends."

Umm...I'm not entirely sure how to feel about this.

Keep reading. Keep writing. Keep dreaming.
