-1790, the French Revolution-

They met when they were wee babes still in their mothers' arms. Soon, they grew up to be the best of friends. They were similar in many ways: both were villagers, poor as dirt, and recently, lost their parents, mothers, and fathers, to the Revolution. They were the only family each other had left in this cruel, cold world.

That April night, Nini groaned as she sprawled out on the bed, watching Ricky glance out the window dreamily, his chin propped up on his hand stupidly. "God, I wish this stupid revolution would end! Everyone could get back to their regular lives and not have to worry about...rivers filled with blood instead of water."

"I've told you before, Nina, they're doing it for a good cause. We're all starving in the streets while the royals dine on delicacies and fill their palaces with the most luxurious treasures."

"Whatever," Nini drawled out. "What about you, Mr. Lover Boy? Who are you thinking of?"

"She's just the most wonderful girl," Ricky sighed. "Gina Porter."

"Oh?" Nini asked curiously, scooting closer for more juicy details. Inside, she'd be lying if she said she wasn't a tiny bit disappointed. She loved him for longer than he could imagine. It was taboo given they were practically siblings, but a small part of her heart had always belonged to him.

"I need you to find her address for me," Ricky said suddenly out of nowhere.

"Why me?"

"Nini, you've always been amazing at sleuthing, and you can put in a good word. Plus, you know the homes of everyone in Paris. Please? For me?"

His puppy-dog eyes were too cute for her to resist, so Nini rolled her eyes. "Yeah, sure. I'll totally risk my life to get a girl's address for you."

"Well, I'm coming with you."

"Do we really need a pistol?"

"Desperate times call for desperate measures," Ricky replied, grabbing the weapon. "I don't think I could live with myself if anything happened to either of us. If it's you, I'll be forever grieving. If it's me, I'll truly be dead."

The two slipped out of the cottage, making sure to watch their backs. The rain was pouring heavily, but when Ricky had his mindset on something, it was impossible to talk him out of it. After a while, Nini finally spotted the location of Gina's house.

Ricky lightly knocked on the gate. "My love? Are you there?"

Nini rolled her eyes. "My love? How long have you ever met?"

"We met a week ago," Ricky sighed, his eyes crinkling into another stupid smile. "She's marvelous. Her eyes sparkle brighter than a blue sky-"

Nini was slightly jealous. Deep inside, she yearned to be the one he spoke of that way, to be the one he loved. To him, she'd always be just his best friend and twin sister.

"Who is it?" a feminine voice yawned. "And at this time of the night?"

Her eyes brightened when she saw that it was Ricky. "Bonjour! I did not expect you here."

Nini's heart dropped when saw how beautiful Gina was. Her eyes glittered brighter than a blue sky, her raven hair was perfectly curly, and she had the most dazzling smile.

With every loving glance and joke they shared, she slowly died. She'd loved this boy for over twenty-two years, and she wouldn't end up getting her happily ever after, that was for sure.

Ricky and Gina's relationship was a real-life fairytale come true. He the handsome and dashing prince, she the beautiful and benevolent princess. Nini was no longer in the story; just an outsider, looking in and narrating.

"I'll come very soon, my love," Ricky said to Gina, leaning through the hole in the gate to peck her lips quickly. Meanwhile, Nini felt like she was dead at that point.

—————————————————

For the rest of the night, Ricky was stuck in dreamland. All he could talk about was Gina. Gina this, Gina that, Gina everything.

Nini bit her lip to keep the tears from flowing. She thought of anything to keep her mind off of it. At that moment, she heard a gunshot behind her. "Run," Ricky whispered, clearly snapping back to the present.

She didn't get very far before she felt a sharp pain in her back, and Nini stumbled to the ground. "Nini!"

Ricky scooped her up, and they ran until they reached one of the vacant corners of the city for a temporary shelter. "Are you alright?"

She looked awfully pale, and there was a trail of blood on the ground. "Ricky...I know I won't live for much longer. I'll spend these last few minutes, just telling you everything I wish I'd told you before. One, I did steal the eggs from the chicken coop in your backyard when we were seven, it wasn't a ghost."

"That's a relief to know."

"Number two," she took a shuddery breath, "I love you."

"I love you too," he said.

"No, I mean, I love you, more than as a friend. I've loved you for longer than you could ever know. God, Ricky, I've always wanted to tell you, I just never had the words for it. I know you only think of me as a sister or a best friend, but it's been better to have you in my life than not at all. My last request is that you go marry Gina. Be happy, and forget about me."

The rain had already begun to pour even harder than before, yet Nini smiled. "Adieu, Ricky."

She closed her eyes, and Ricky knew that she had passed. He quietly sobbed and kissed her forehead. "Something that once could've been, and now it's gone."

I was inspired by Les Mis: the Eponine, Marius, and Cosette love triangle. Well, you requested it, audrey_sparkles.

This turned out a lot shorter than I thought it would, but I do get a head start on finishing some other fanfics. Hope y'all enjoyed it!!!

Keep reading. Keep writing. Keep dreaming.

P.S. I think my fluff writing ability has disappeared down the drain along with the power to not cry when listening to Broadway musical soundtracks. Also, GOD, I HATE FAMILY GATHERINGS!!! One more thing before I go: HOW THE HELL IS EVERYONE TEAM RINA NOW?!! I guess that I'm stuck in Rini angst land for the rest of my life, so...

Okay...my Spotify was playing "Look Down," and then "Houston Train dot com" came on. I'm rolling on the floor right now.
