The finale (and apologies, sad ending) of what is the Romeo and Juliet: Rini series.
Inspired by @joshs_franklin's oneshot, "Till Forever Falls Apart."
"Young lady, you've been having a secret affair with the Bowen boy behind our backs this entire time?" Mr. Roberts exclaimed with his hands on his hips.
"N-no, I haven't," Nini choked out. It was a lie, but better than the truth.
"Very well, because you're engaged to marry EJ Caswell," her mother answered.
"Why? I don't love him, why should I marry him?"
"For your benefit, Nina," her dad said, silencing her with a stern glare.
"More like yours," she spat.
"Go to your room, now!" her mother thundered.
Ricky, who'd snuck in through her bedroom window, had heard the whole conversation from the hall. He silently slinked away, closing the window behind him.
"You're WHAT?" Ricky's eyes popped out of his head.
"Ricky, it's not your fault. We've decided to legally separate," Mike answered, running a hand through his hair.
"Why?" the curly-haired boy sobbed. "You were once in love, so why would you fall out of it? Is this over a baseball card? Why, why, why, why?"
"We're not Phoebe and Aaron," his mom replied. "Ricky, you've been the only glue keeping us together these past sixteen years, please understand."
Tears had already clouded his vision, and Ricky grabbed his skateboard by the door. "I'm spending the night at Red's," he announced.
"Hon, wait-" Lynne started to say.
Ricky didn't hear anything else and had already started the ride to Red's house.
Upon arriving, he noticed that the basement had been cleared out, and the upper half of the house had suitcases and boxes filling every corner.
"What's going on?" he asked the redheaded boy.
Red bit his lip. "Ricky, I'm moving. We're selling this house."
He chuckled. "Nah, you're kidding. Why would you be moving?"
"We have to go visit my family and extended family in Italy. My grandma and aunt have been really sick, and my parents and I will be taking over the pizzeria there. My cousin Eliza will be coming over to run the place over here, so don't worry."
"There's something you're not telling me," Ricky answered slowly.
Red squeezed his eyes shut and blurted out the whole thing in one breath. "It's permanent!"
"What?" Ricky shook his head, refusing to believe what he'd just heard.
"I'm moving to Italy permanently, I have only one week left in Salt Lake."
Ricky sat himself down on the floor, where there once was Red's bed. He wanted to break down and cry, but instead, he patted his best friend's shoulder. "That's great for you."
"Ricky, I'll miss you. You're the only friend I have here besides Ashlyn. Promise you'll write?"
The curly-haired boy hugged his best friend and nodded. "Of course."
The day that the Redonovichs left for Italy, tricky hugged everyone goodbye at the airport.
"You can always come to visit us," Mr. Redonovich said, patting the boy's back.
