Plot: What does love mean?
—————
Love means always having extra snacks on hand.
Ricky's stomach grumbled loudly. His parents were too wrapped up in doing...whatsoever they were doing that they'd forgotten to pack his lunch for him. And the cafeteria pizza tasted like cardboard, which he knew firsthand since he'd had experience with swallowing a piece by accident before.
"You hungry?" the little freckled girl in pigtails next to him asked, holding out a Hershey bar. "I've got plenty to share."
He smiled gratefully, showing his gapped tooth. "Tanks, Nini."

"Dammit, I forgot to pack my lunch!" Nini groaned. They were in their sophomore year of high school, and surprisingly, Nini had forgotten to grab her lunch. Ricky thought maybe the new foreign exchange student that ended up making out with her in the backseat of his car was the reason why.
"Hey, I've got Starbursts," he grinned, pouring some into her palm. "Pink ones only, your favorite."
"How was I so lucky to get a best friend like Richard Bowen?" she sighed.
"I learned from the best," he laughed.
—————
Love means being there for each other.
"Nini, what's up? Why have you been sitting in a sad heap moping around all day?"
"He-broke-up-with-me," she sniffled, throwing another tissue into the already-full trash can. By "he," she meant the foreign exchange student that Ricky had previously mentioned.
"Hey, look at me," he said, tilting her chin up so she would face him. "Look, Daniel Wasjahowski is a dick to have dumped you. You can do better than him, Neens. There are at least a bajillion other dudes in this universe that would want to date you, I swear. Now come on, I've got non-refundable tickets to the Greatest Showman. If you want to rant and scream on the way, you're more than welcome to."
On the car ride to the movie, he listened as Nini poured out all she'd been holding up inside. When they got into the theater, he may have taken his rage out on Daniel by continuously screaming "THAT'S NOT REALISTIC!" at the screen. Eventually, they both got kicked out, but he made it up to her by getting her the DVD copy when it was released, right in time for Christmas.
~
"Ricky, what's wrong?" Nini asked upon noticing his bloodshot eyes.
"My mom and dad divorced for two weeks, and now she's moved to Chicago, forgotten all about us, and has a new boyfriend, sound familiar?" he shot back.
He didn't mean to snap at her. It was just that his mom was always the one he went to. He could trust her, and now it felt like even that had been taken away from him. What...who was next, Big Red? He'd already lost Nini and his mom, and Mike had become a walking zombie.
"Whoa, I'm just trying to help," she took a step back. "You know you can always talk to me, alright? Even if we're not romantically involved, I'll be here for you."
"Thanks," he muttered under his breath and headed out the door. "Although I didn't need a buddy to tell me that."
The truth was, he did need her.
