They stared at her from across the road, barely believing their own eyes. She stared right back, her face filled with happiness and relief. Suddenly, it was gone, and she put her sunglasses back on and dashed over to them. Without a word, she grabbed Darius and Yasmina by the arm and pulled them along, Ben and Max following right behind her.
She led them through the bustling streets until they, once again, found themselves in a secluded alley away from the public streets. "Hey," Yasmina said warmly, smiling despite her own disbelief. "Sweet arm".
"Thanks," Brooklynn replied, not taking her eyes off the exit of the alley. Once she was sure it was clear, she removed her glasses and ditched the awful hat, turning to them. "Sammy and Kenji?"
"They didn't come with us," Yasmina explained.
For a moment, disappointment and hurt crossed her face. "Oh," was all she managed to say to that. It was gone just as quickly, her expression changed to smile as she turned to Max. Max stared right back unable to keep himself from smiling at the sight of her. "It's good to see you alive, Max," she said, walking up to him.
A breath of air escaped him as his eyes stung with unshed tears of happiness. "Same to you," he managed. Just as tears were about to fall, his hands reached and wiped his eyes dry, though his voice still choked up. "I was so worried I didn't save you that night".
"You did," Brooklyn confirmed, unaware of the weight that she had just lifted from his shoulders. "It's because of you that I managed to get as far as I have. Maybe now I can return the favour".
He looked down at her metal arm, feeling a pang of shame. "I'm sorry I couldn't save all of you," he said as he looked away.
"Don't be," Brooklynn replied, her eyes set in determination. "You did more than enough".
"What's going on?" Ben asked, pulling them back to the topic at hand.
Wanting to getting right to business, Brooklynn gave them the short version. "Santos is selling her killer Atrociraptors and she put a hit on an agent, that's been following me. I can't be in too places at once, not for lack of trying, so...". She looked at each of them, a pleading look on her face. "I need your help".
That wasn't a sentence Brooklynn commonly said, if ever. But this was more than just a request. In her eyes, they could see she was asking for more than just to help her here and now. She was asking them to look past everything she had put them through, for now, and to trust that she knew what she was doing.
Max had already made up his mind, and the others had too. It was why they had decided to come here in the first place. "Say no more," Darius nodded. "We're in".
"So what's the plan?" Ben asked. "We stop this sale?"
"The Broker selling her assassin Dinosaurs is just the first step," Brooklynn whispered, leaning toward them. "She's primed to take over the entire underground market. If she does, she'll become unstoppable and so will the people who are backing her".
"Biosyn," Max growled.
"That's right," she said, confirming the worst case scenario. "It's time to take her whole operation down, once and for all. The Broker is handing off the Atrociraptors to her contact, Rainn Delacourt, at the black market".
"So we need to be there," Darius figured.
Ben put his hand to his chin. "It's a long shot, but I think I might know someone who can help".
"Great. You, Max and Yasmina go there while Brooklynn and I...".
"No," Brooklynn interrupted immediately. "I have to be at the black market when this goes down".
