Her eyes slid open, a bright light shining straight down on her. Her ears were ringing and she could feel the blood pumping through them as she lay their on the ground. The blurriness in her eyes faded and she made out the shape of a lamp post right above her, the source of the light. It was strange, her arm felt like it was on fire, and she could feel a liquid pooling underneath her. What was she laying in?

A distant roar of a creature sounded off from afar, and in the far reaches of her mind, she made out a voice, calling to her.

"Brooklynn?" It called out to her, it sounded worried, desperate to find the owner of that name. Who was she again? Whose voice was that? "Brooklynn? Where are you!? Answer me!" It cried.

The creature roared again and the voice screamed in fear. Suddenly her arm flared up in pain, and the distant voices screams were drowned out by her own.

Brooklynn awoke with a gasp, immediately shooting in sitting position on the couch she found herself on. Her hand landed on her arm, just below her elbow in an attempt to ease the pain that was flaring there. Weirdly, her hand passed right through her arm, as if it wasn't even...

Brooklynn looked down at her arm, and found her hand and most of her forearm completely gone. What was left was wrapped in bandages. Brooklynn stared wide eyed at her stump of an arm, stunned as her brain processed what she was seeing.

A sudden creak of the houses floorboards jolted her from her stupor. Her eyes trailed up from the floor to the kitchen nearby, where a person stood at the bench, their hands in the sink. Brooklynn got to her feet, wobbling for a moment before she shakily stepped over to her and spoke.

"Who are you?"

The woman jumped on the spot and spun around with gasp. Brooklynn flinched back and fell against the wall, her hand flying out to steady her. "Didn't think you'd be up so soon," she said. "We met yesterday, remember?"

Brooklynn studied her face. She did look familiar, but her mind was so scrambled she couldn't find a memory where she was in it. Her arm flared in pain again and she gripped it tightly with a hiss. "Memory loss is fairly common after a traumatic injury," the woman continued. "Do you remember what happened?"

"I...I was in the woods...," Brooklynn began. "It was dark". Images flashed through her mind. A giant monster of grey scales and horns. Smaller, agile animals with sharp teeth and claws. A blank face and eyes that never blinked with a whistle to their mouth. And a voice, calling out to her in fear.

Brooklynn stumbled and nearly fell to the floor, but was caught just in time by the woman. She walked her back to the couch and lay her down on it. "You might feel a bit woozy from all the blood you lost".

"Where am I?"

"I didn't want to run into whoever did this to you on the ride into town, so I brought you home and stitched you up," she answered. Brooklynn looked down at her arm in shock. Someone did this to her? That face came back into her mind, that cold, blank stare. But then another face came into her mind, but it was blurry and muffled. She couldn't decide if this face in her mind was from someone who was friendly, or not.

"Look, I'm really sorry about your arm," the woman said. "Try to get some rest. We'll talk more in the morning".

Brooklynn watched the woman get up and leave the room, before looking back at her arm. Her arm! It was just gone! What the hell was she supposed to do now? She held back the tears that were about to fall from her eyes and instead closed her eyes. Maybe she would wake up in the morning and this would all be just a bad dream...
