" it's not too early to stand in front of a moving car, right ?"

" for the last time, the odds of dying after being struck by a car are about one in 47,273 ," jaehyun points out. twirling a pen around his fingers, his eyes focus on his laptop screen and causes his best friend to pout. " and if you survive, mama will kill you ."

sicheng pouts harder as he plops down onto the seat across jaehyun. the other has been studying for hours – only half-heartedly listening to sicheng's rants. sicheng makes an airplane out of one of jaehyun's work-sheets and debates tossing it to him to earn his attention.

to be fair, he's rambling about how he's gonna find ninety-nine ways to avoid midterms and all that gibberish. but still. jaehyun's supposed to be his ride-or-die. surely he's way more important than assignments.

" sounds like a win-win to me. either way, I'll die, right? boom, no midterms anymore ."

behind his thick gold-rimmed glasses, jaehyun rolls his eyes. " don't be stupid. you could study rather than finding dumb ways to die. and give that paper back ."

" it's easy for you to say! you're the golden boy. even if you don't study, an A is guaranteed for you ." sicheng borderline whines, stretching his arms forward like a kitten.

jaehyun turns to sicheng for the first time and sighs. he reaches out to caress sicheng's hair, running his fingers through sicheng's caramel-hued strands. sicheng, like the kitten he is, leans to jaehyun's touch.

long story short, jaehyun and sicheng have been friends as long as they could remember. their parents are family friends. sicheng doesn't even remember not knowing jaehyun; having grown up alongside him. they're close enough that jaehyun calls sicheng's mom mama – and now they're dormmates in college.

as close as they are, though, there's something sicheng hates to admit.

he's always envious of jaehyun. the older has always been... more. whatever sicheng has, he has it, but better. he's smarter, has a better voice, plays the piano better, more favoured by people, more out-going, has more friends. the only thing sicheng thinks he can win is on dancing.

it started since he was eleven. when his mama told him she preferred a son like jaehyun, it planted the first seed of envy in sicheng's heart. no matter how much he loves jaehyun, he can't get rid of it.

it's his bad habit to want whatever jaehyun has.

" first of all, no one calls me golden boy. that's eunwoo. second, you can study with me so I can help you on what you're lacking ."

" but dying is easier ."

jaehyun flicks sicheng's forehead. sicheng withdraws with a shriek. " brat. I'm gonna tell mama you didn't study ."

" speaking of that, did I tell you? last time we went to my nana's she called me B-sian in front of my relatives. because I can't get an A !" sicheng huffs. " she hates me ."

" don't say that. she loves you, just... has her own way of showing it. whatever. asian parents are like that. now you have to study for real and quit complaining before I call you a B-sian too ."

" meanie. you're supposed to help me !"

before jaehyun could retort, there's a knock on the door. he doesn't say it yet his face morphs into relief – probably since he doesn't have to entertain sicheng's childish antics, at least for now. sicheng shoots him a glare and gets up to his feet.

when he opens the door, a warm smile greets him.
