divorce is no longer a strange thing in this society.
it happens almost every day. happens in books, films, shows, dramas, and of course — real life. as time passes and world progresses, people begin to get more open-minded about the concept of divorce.
though no one told mark how difficult the whole ordeal really is. nobody prepared him for the hours spent in court, watching his parents fight for custody; for the days alternating between his mom and dad and granny's houses. for the heavy feeling in his chest during sleepless nights.
for having to choose.
his parents are no longer his parents. they're strangers, people mark has never seen before.
out of all sudden they become too sweet and generous. bribed him with materialistic things, with stuff they never bought him before, with the I-love-yous they never said; with his future, his happiness.
come with me and you'll be happier, they each told him. they didn't seem to care that mark would be happier if this never happened.
of course, mark isn't a child. he's sixteen. he knows there's no hope for his parents' marriage. but he's human and, damn, it'll be a lie if he says it doesn't hurt to see your family falling apart in front of you, and you can do nothing about it.
maybe if this thing ends soon, then he'll be okay again, no matter which guardian he ends up with.
but that's the thing. it hasn't even ended yet.
for now, mark is staying with his dad because his mom's in canada to sort stuff out. according to her, once things settled and when – if she wins, he'll stay with her there.
he's not exactly keen on leaving korea, but staying with his dad is another thing.
mark ruffles his own hair, tugs on it until it hurts. he closes his eyes. he tries to imagine them before this shit happened. tries to think back of the good days, of his parents in their lovey-dovey phase, of dad tucking him in and mom kissing him goodnight.
maybe if he tries hard enough, he can change his reality.
goddamnit. why can't they wait until he become an adult? it'll be so much easier then.
" minhyung ."
his thoughts disappear – like sand being washed away by waves. hesitant, mark looks up. he hasn't heard the particular voice for a while and, to be frank, it's heaven to. it's like escaping a nightmare; the last bell on a school day.
there he is, the angel, smiling softly at him.
dong sicheng.
the son to his dad's skillful lawyer. in fact, his lawyer is the only reason his dad hasn't lost yet. with his previous criminal record, and now drunkard reputation, he would've lost on the first day if it's not for his lawyer's cunning skills.
anyway, sicheng isn't anything like his father. he's a sweetheart, and the only person who cares about mark in this situation.
" gege ," mark chokes out. " hi ."
" can I sit ?"
mark nods and scoots away to make room. sicheng sits down next to him. he hasn't realized when, but his palms are sweaty. it'll leave imprints on the leather couch.
the law firm is small, with terrible lighting, located in between two vacant shops. mark's never understood why they never renovated the building or even moved when they can afford three whole buildings and still have extra money. according to sicheng, his dad is too stingy to buy new shoes, let alone a new office.
