ARTEMIS'S POV.
It's been a week since we rescued Demitri and also a week since.... since he has been in.... a coma. Doctors have told us, it's the best way for his body to heal, but also he shouldn't be in this sate for long..... It's complicated!
The bullet was shot from a diagonal angle, so it has done some serious damage to his left kidney.
Also, Peter too had a successful surgery, gio anni didn't shot his in any of the vital organs.
I would have dragged him through the lanes of hell, back into his earth, if he had died.
I ain't letting him go with such an easy death.
"He'll pay for everything, Demi. Everything he did to you and mom. For making me suffer the loss of her, taking me away from my family." I whisper at Demi.
After staring at him for quite some while, I pull out a photo frame from the small backpack I've got from the Richard's mansion for my stay here. I once again pass the plump of my thumb over the blobs in the photo, beneath the delicate glass. "I couldn't protect you both, but I got him back. I promise I'll do everything in my power to bring him back to normal." I whisper looking at the frame and lean near Demitri, the frame under me.
I discretely push the frame back into the backpack as I'm alerted of someone's presence as the door opens.
"Ari, You awake?" I hear a familiar voice and let out a sigh of relief.
"Yes, Ares." I reply, lifting my head from near Demitri. I sniffle and rub my nose as I turn around. Ares seats himself on one of the couches.
"Why aren't you sleeping?" He asked. "It's half past midnight." He added. The moonlight shone on his face, giving his nose and jaw a prominent look. The room was dimly lit, very much to my liking.
"Couldn't sleep. You?" I asked.
"I'm on Demitri's look out duty." He replied with a shrug.
"I'm on a look out duty for the one who's on the look out duty for my brother." I reply, earning a playful glare from him.
There was comfortable silence in the room, except for the heart monitor's beeping sound.
"Nightmares?" Ares asked, interrupting the comfortable silence. I shifted in the place.
"What?" I ask, caught off-guard, looking at him. In return he gives me a deadpanned look, making me sigh. I get up from my place and walk towards him, my backpack in my hand. "I'm scared Ares. I'm scared that the next time I open my eyes, he won't be there. I'm scared of seeing his unconscious, bloodied body infront of me, every time a close my eyes. I'm scared of looking at all their faces everytime I close my eyes." I felt my lower lip quiver as I spoke. "I'm scared Ares, scared of this never ending nightmare." I say as I hug him, burying my face into his chest and he wraps his arm around me.
"He's right here, Ari. Infront of our eyes. He's doing fine and just being a dick, sleeping for so long." Ares replied. A small playful snort escaped my lips. Silence spread in the room yet again, except for the heart monitor.
I pulled out the frame from my bag and once again caressed it, a sniffle escaping from my hold. "Why can't people just let me die, Ares?" I asked suddenly. By the way I felt him stiffen, I knew I had taken him by surprise. "Why don't they let me die instead of them dying on me. Demitri could've let me take the bullet, so could Mom, and the rest. Why don't they let me die, Ares? Why fill me with all the guilt?" I sniffled and whispered the last sentence to him.
"Artemis, Little, look here." he said sternly, making me face him. "It isn't your fault, it wasn't your fault that they," he pointed at the frame in my hands "died," he pointed at Demitri, "or got injured instead of you." He looked back at me. "They readily handed themselves over to the doors of death because you are way too precious and important to them. They must have seen or witnessed something on you, that made them take that decision. Demitri will be alright and he'll wake up once he stops being a dick and prick he is right now." Ares said sternly and hugged me tightly.
