The other night dear, as I lay sleeping,
I dreamed I held you in my arms.Wilbur woke up, hating that it was another day without Tommy. Wilbur would give anything just to hear the sound of his voice again. He missed the younger boy so much that it hurt.
Some days, the grief hit him so hard that he could barely breathe. Today was one of those days.
But when I awoke, dear, I was mistaken,
So I hung my head and I cried. He laid on his bed, sobbing and gasping for air. From somewhere in the house, someone's wails joined his in a haunting symphony. The noise felt like a knife to the gut.
Wilbur felt the need to find his family and cry with them. He mustered up the strength to get out of his room for the second time since Tommy died. He quietly padded down the hallway past Techno's room, Philza's room, and Tommy's room.
He heard muffled crying coming from Tommy's room. He paused outside the door. He looked up and down the hallway, trying to decide whether or not to enter. Wilbur stepped inside, ignoring the pain in his heart. He found Techno curled up on Tommy's bed, crying into Tommy's pillow. Without saying a word, he laid down next to him.
"I miss him," Techno said, his voice sticky from crying. Wilbur breathed a shaky breath and nodded, not trusting his voice.
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine.
You make me happy when skies are gray.
You'll never know dear, how much I love you.He thought of all of the things they could've done differently. If only they had told Tommy how much they loved him, maybe he would still be here. If they had noticed his change in attitude, his newfound silence, and his hurt, maybe they could've saved him.
Wilbur wished he had said, "I love you," one last time. Now Tommy would never know how much he loved him.
Please don't take my sunshine away.
He remembered the night Tommy had died.
The red ambulance lights still flashed behind Wilbur's eyes. The sirens still echoed in his head. The chaos and panic of the night still burned like a wildfire inside of him.
Wilbur was the one who found Tommy passed out on the floor with a bottle of pills in his hand. He was the one who screamed and cried for Tommy. He was the one whose shaky hands dialed 911 but couldn't seem to hit the buttons fast enough.
I'll always love you and make you happy,
If you will only say the same.Wilbur remembered their last conversation: a fight over who was Phil's favorite. It started out as a joke, but the words became harsher and harsher as time passed. He had even told Tommy he hated him. Tommy left with tears in his eyes, and Wilbur said nothing.
Later that night, with a sick feeling in his stomach, Wilbur had gone to check on Tommy. That was when he found him. Wilbur couldn't help but blame himself; he felt responsible for Tommy's death.
But if you leave me and love another,
You'll regret it all some day. When he heard Techno's soft snores, Wilbur smiled a half-smile. He sat up carefully, not wanting to wake Techno up. He sighed and wiped the tears from his eyes.
Wilbur went to the bathroom. He splashed water on his face and looked in the mirror. For a second, Tommy appeared behind him. Wilbur blinked hard, and Tommy was gone again.
This had been happening a lot lately. The grief must've made him insane, or maybe it was the restless nights he spent crying until he couldn't anymore. Whatever the case, he knew he was just imagining Tommy. Right?
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine.
You make me happy when skies are gray.Wilbur went to the kitchen to find Philza sitting at the island and staring off into the distance. Silent tears ran down the older man's face. Wilbur touched his father's shoulder comfortingly; the blond didn't respond.
Wilbur sighed again. He stepped out into the cool England air. The sky was gray and thick with clouds. He felt like the sky looked: cold and dull. Tommy wasn't there to bring color to his life; his death sucked the color from Wilbur's world.
Please don't take my sunshine away.
In all my dreams, dear, you seem to leave me
When I awake my poor heart pains. He wished things would go back to the way they were before, but he knew they never would. He wished he had done something to save Tommy, anything. He wished he could take his broken family's pain away.
But he couldn't, and it hurt like hell.
So when you come back and make me happy
I'll forgive you dear, I'll take all the blame."Wilby!" someone called. Wilbur looked around, hand over his heart. The voice sounded just like Tommy. He half expected the blond boy to run up and give him a hug. His heart lurched when he remembered he wouldn't ever get a hug from his little brother again.
There was a boy on the street. He was blond, maybe 6'1, and he wore his signature red and white shirt. He was pale and slightly transparent.
That boy was Tommy.
"Toms?" Wilbur cried. The ghost floated towards him and happily flipped in the air. Wilbur's eyes welled up with tears. "I'm so sorry, Toms. I'm so sorry. It was all my fault. If I had known-" His voice cracked. He swallowed thickly. "If I only had known..."
"Have some blue!" Tommy's ghost said, handing him a blue flower. Wilbur smiled and smelled the flower: a cornflower, his favorite. The ghost's happy facade melted for a moment to show the real Tommy. "I don't blame you, Big Man. It had been building up for a while, and I... I couldn't take it anymore." Wilbur nodded, his lips quivering and tears running down his face.
"I love you, Toms." A wave of peace settled over him. Tommy finally knew how much he loved him. He took a deep breath of the cool air and breathed out shakily. He nodded once at the fading ghost.
"I love you, Wilby."
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine.
You make me happy when skies are gray. You'll never know dear, how much I love you.
Please don't take my sunshine away.
