I burst out laughing.
"You got me there, I didn't think you guys are this funny," I say catching my breath.
"We are not joking Kaylee," Naomi says grimly.
"And how am I supposed to believe that?" I ask still trying to catch my breath.
"Here's proof." Smith hands me a manilla envelope. Opening it I see a picture of my mum when she was around thirteen. I know it because she had a whole album with her pictures on it but on this one, a middle-aged man is behind her holding a woman's hand. I look at their faces and I feel tears rolling down my face.
Naomi makes her way towards me, seating next to me.
"I am sorry we didn't tell you sooner. We were just scared you'd hate us." Naomi says rubbing my back.
"But why didn't my mum ever talk about you? She used to say that her parents were dead." I say pulling away from her tense figure.
Naomi looks away from me to Smith. Having a silent conversation. Her eyes look pleadingly at Smith.
"No, don't," Smith says his features sad.
"We have to tell her Smith," Naomi says as tears stream down her face.
"Promise not to hate us, please." Naomi voices.
"I can't promise you anything," I reply not liking where this conversation is going.
"That's fair." She says her voice shaking.
"We disowned her," Smith says looking away.
"Why would you do that?" I ask.
"She got pregnant," Naomi answers looking away from me too.
"You disowned her because she got pregnant?" I say standing up and rubbing my belly since doing it helps me calm my nerves.
"She was in high school, she was supposed to study, go to university, be a doctor maybe then she could have gotten pregnant," Smith says running his hands through his face as if trying to control his anger.
"Just because she got pregnant you kicked her out to go fend for herself at only eighteen ?" I ask.
Fucking Unbelievable!
"Of course! Who told her to get pregnant in the first place. And instead of owning up to her mistake and ask for my forgiveness she goes and gets married to that poor son of a bitch!" Smith shouts and I feel myself burning up.
"Take that back," I say warningly.
"I won't! He deserved it!" Smith shouts earning a gasp from me and Naomi.
"What is wrong with you Smith?" Naomi scolds before I can even talk I see black dots, feeling my body hit the floor.
"What have you done!" Is the last thing I hear before everything goes silent.
I wake up. Looking around I'm back in my room, Naomi sleeping next to Smith on the couch looking quite uncomfortable. I rub my belly, letting out a breath of relief.
"You are awake," Naomi says softly walking over to my bed. Now that I look at her I can see where my mum got those eyes from. Beautiful green orbs.
Trying to talk I feel my throat aching, Naomi notices and hands me a glass of water that was on the nightstand.
"Thanks" I rasp out as the cold water soothes my throat.
"How are you feeling darling?" Naomi asks grabbing my right hand in hers.
"I'm fine," I say.
"I'm sorry about Smith, he lost his temper and said some bad things that I know he didn't mean," Naomi says with pleading eyes.
"I won't lie and say that it's all fine but I don't want you to apologize for the things you didn't do," I say squeezing her hands reassuringly.
"Then I'm sorry." I hear Smith speak out his head lowered.
"I'll let you two talk alone," Naomi says before shooting Smith a warning gaze and leaving.
"I shouldn't have said what I said, that was uncalled for," Smith says taking a seat on my bed. I shoot him a soft smile before grabbing his hands in mine.
"I forgive you but if only you do tell me how my mother was, well before she left. Deal?" I say taking my hands and offering a handshake which he shakes chuckling lowly.
"You remind me so much about my sweet Angel." He says warmly, melting my heart.
Hours later I fall asleep, Smith/grandpa tells me stories about my mum. Every time he spoke about her his eyes held that sparkle.
I wake up feeling hungry. I head towards the kitchen, getting lost a few times when finally I get to the kitchen.
I find Mary wrapping some leftover lasagna to put in the fridge. After much convincing I let her fix me something to eat considering I'm used to making my food. I wait patiently as she makes me my favorite. White rice, french beans with salad. A glass of fresh mango juice next to the plate.
Thanking her. I dig in.
Finishing I clean the dishes and say goodnight heading back to my room. I change into comfortable sweats and a tank top. I get into bed, turning off the lights. Sighing into the pillow and waiting for sleep to engulf me.
I roll on my bed for the millionth time hoping to find sleep but my mind keeps drifting to what Smith and Naomi had said.
Never in a million years did I ever think I could find any member of my remaining family, especially grandparents. My mum used to tell us that they had died, I can't say that I am mad at her. In fact, I am proud of her for fighting for what she thought was right. I miss her so much.
I look at the bedside clock and see it's almost 2. I sigh looking at the ceiling hoping sleep would come to me. I rub my belly sighing as relief flows through my body.
I wake up to someone shaking me. I open my eyes and internally curse at the stupid blinding light flowing through the curtains. I shoot a glare at Naomi who only shrugs opening the curtains even wider.
"Wakey wakey princess. It's a new day for you to be better than you were yesterday." She says sitting on my bed.
"No thanks, I'm going back to sleep. I'll be better tomorrow." I say letting out a yawn.
"Uh-uh, young lady. Wake up and get dressed. We are going out today." She says standing up and walking to the door.
I let out a sigh, rubbing my belly I walk to the bathroom, stripping, and grabbing my shower cap. After a cold shower, I'm freshly clean. I dry myself and walk to the closet picking out a baby pink wrap dress and white flats. I put my locks in a tight high bun. I decide to put on minimal makeup consisting of only mascara and lipgloss. I put on my new silver hoop earrings loving the look, I snap a few mirror pictures.
I head downstairs, I could hear Naomi and Smith talking. Following the sounds of people talking leads me to the dining room. I kiss both their cheeks before settling down on my seat next to Naomi and starting to dig in. After breakfast, the house helps do take the dishes to the kitchen leaving the three of us alone."I know I said we are going out today but your grandpa here says that it's best if we don't since we have received word that Isabella is still looking for you," Naomi says taking my hand in hers.
"However, we can still work from home," Smith says and I look at him.
"Work?" I ask.
"Yes. You are the heir after all." He says smiling.
What the actual fuck?
