That same day, JJ received an urgent call asking for the team's participation on a case in New Jersey, for which they left immediately.
Jordan had warned Thaleia that she still wasn't officially a member of the FBI, as her credentials hadn't been approved yet and neither was her gun certification. The girl told the man that she would be careful, which they both knew was kind of a lie... people still had to trust her thinking, as everyone often claimed she was reckless- but she had thought of every possibility and every possible outcome before explaining her plans and ideas. No matter how many times she told that to people, they never trusted her.
She had been thinking of proving how she always balanced every option to come to a decision by writing it all down before speaking during this case, but as she scanned over the files on their way to Jersey, Thaleia already had a really solid theory of how the Unsub was working and his patterns.
"Do you fancy a game of chess, Dr Reid?" she sat down in front of the genius, who was going over his own ideas about the case.
"I'd rather concentrate on the case and not waste my time winning uncomplicated games of chess" he smirked lifting his eyes to meet the green ones of his crush, who narrowed hers in return.
"He beats you at chess?" Morgan mocked her "I would have thought you'd at least be on his level"
"To be honest, I could win... the only other time I played against him was when he was sick and I wanted to make him happy so..."
"Lame excuse for losing so many times in a row"
"Prove it, then"
"I'm not giving in, Thaleia"
"You're scared I might actually win?" they shared a challenging look "Bring it on, Bubbles"
"Fine" as the boy set up the board, Thaleia leaned back on her seat, glancing to the side at Emily and Morgan, who had now made it obvious that they were going to watch the game as if it were a worldwide competition "Let me at least exercise my brain by talking about the case with the others while you concentrate in which piece to move... Whites or Blacks?"
"Are you trying to make me look racist?"
"Are you trying to distract me by making meaningless and awful jokes?"
"If I were to do that" she pointed towards Spencer's left closed fist, which he opened to reveal the black king "I'd tell you that the reason why the shrimp doesn't want to share his treasure is because he's quite shellfish"
JJ snorted at the joke. Everyone knew that woman had a soft spot for bad and dad jokes.
"So" Spencer moved the first piece on the board "Victimology"
"All over the place... a middle-aged couple, a male student and an old man" she moved her pawn as she spoke "Let's see how long it takes you to come to the same conclusion I did"
"About the case?" his move.
"Yes" her move "CODs"
"Two drownings, eaten alive by animals and run over by a car, which caused the PD to not connect it to the other deaths at first" his move.
"It could have been an accident" her move.
"But it wasn't" his move. The two went back and forth quite quickly "Have you been practicing?"
