Reese***

I adjusted my bra underneath my dress for the hundredth time. I have no idea why I agreed to have dinner with Rickel's mother. She hates me like poison!

Rickel hired a catering team to look after dinner since I would be a guess tonight. I felt so weird.  Why does his mother suddenly want to have dinner with me? Was she secretly planning my death? I have to be on guard for anything tonight.

"Dinner is ready babe." Rickel called. "Care to join us?"

I took a deep breath. I will never ever be prepared to have dinner with Rickel's mother. I descended the steps and took a seat beside Rickel at the dining table. Renae sat opposite us wearing an elegant looking dress that was probably more expensive than everything I owned.

"Shall we eat?" Rickel asked and his mother shook her head.

"No not yet. I'm sorry Rickel but I had to do this."

Rickel got tense beside me. It seemed like I was the only clueless person sitting at the table.

"I've just lost my appetite." I have never seen Rickel this tense before. I placed my hand over his and it calmed him down somewhat.

"He won't be coming here to cause any trouble. We just want to have a peaceful dinner."

I didn't know who she was referring to but I'm guessing it's someone Rickel hates.

Just then the doorbell rang and one of the caterers went to get it. A tall man walked in. He looked like an older version of Rickel with way less hair but handsome just the same. He had to be Rickel's father.

I remained quiet but the question was running through my mind. Why did Rickel hate his father so much?

Renae got up to greet him. "Welcome darling." She said. "You can have a seat beside me."

When he sat down, he smiled at Rickel. "Good evening son. How are you?"

Rickel didn't look at him. His gaze was on the steak knife. "So we can start eating now right?"

"Come on Rickel." Renae pressed. "Aren't you going to at least introduce your girlfriend to your father?"

Rickel ignored her as he packed his place. This was the Rickel I met when I just started working here: Serious, angry and guarded.

Renae sighed. "This is Reese." She gestured toward me and I stretched out my hand to greet him.

"It's nice to meet you Reese." He shook my hand firmly. "You have very soft hands."

Rickel laughed. "Yes. She has soft hands. Do you want to have sex with her? Huh Dad?"

I coughed involuntarily. Why would Rickel ask his father such a question? I was shocked and a little embarrassed.

"Ok everyone. Let's enjoy this beautifully prepared meal." Renae said cheerfully. She was desperately trying to keep everyone calm.

We ate in silence and you could cut the tension with a knife. Rickel's eyes never left his dad's and they sent shooting glares at each other while they ate.

"So Reese, where are you from?" I almost jumped when Renae directed her question to me.

I cleared my throat. "Well I was born and raised in Puerto Rico but I came here after high school to attend college."

She looked surprised. "College? Really? So how did you end up being a maid? Money issues?"

I held my head down. I wished I was anywhere but here right now.

"No personal questions mother." Rickel commanded.

Renae smiled. "Ok. I'm sorry Reese."

Something was wrong here. Renae was not being her usual bitchy self.

The rest of dinner was filled with casual small talk between Renae and her husband. Whenever they ask me a question I would give a brief answer but Rickel remained quiet.

"That was a well prepared meal." Renae announced once we were finished eating.

She looked to her husband and he knodded. "We have something to tell you Rickel." She said in a more serious tone.

Rickel squinted his eyes. "What?"

Renae took a deep breath. "We are getting a divorce."

Oh crap.

Rickel scowled at his father. "You piece of shit! After all you've done to my mother you want to divorce her?"

"Uhmmm......Reese can you help me bring these dishes to the kitchen please." Renae asked.

Happy to escape from the table, I sprung to my feet immediately. I placed the dishes in the sink and casually turned the pipe on. I was so used to my job that I didn't even remember that I was a guest tonight.

Renae leaned on the counter beside me. "Reese, if you had kids wouldn't you want the best for them?"

My defense mode was standing by ready to kick in. "Yes. Of course I would."

She smiled. "Then you must understand where I am coming from. I want the best for my son and in my eyes you are not the best."

This was the Renae I met weeks ago. For some weird reason I truly understand what she was saying. If I had a rich son, I would probably think every girl he talks to is a potential gold digger. I folded my arms as she continued talking.

"Rickel really loves you Reese so I have no choice but to accept you. I hope over time we'll get to know each other better so you can hate me less." She stretched out her arms to embrace me in a hug. I reluctantly took it.

She smiled as she held my hands and looked into my eyes. I was so nervous that I felt like I was having an out of body experience.

"Reese, I'm sorry for how I treated you in the past." She hung her head for a while and when she looked up again her eyes were filled with tears. "Reese please promise me you won't hurt him."

My heart was clenching in my chest. "I promise." I whispered.

"Thank you." She hugged me again, a bit tighter this time.

I was shaking like a leaf in the wind. It was hard to see someone as tough as Renae cry so easily. She must be very serious about what she said. Right there I decided to tell Rickel everything tonight.

We heard something break in the dining room. I almost forgot that Rickel was out there arguing with his father.

"Let's go before they kill each other." Renae chuckled.

When we got there both men were on their feet glaring at each other.

"I think it's time for you to leave." Rickel said.

His father backed away. "I hope you'll forgive me in time to come. I don't want to lose my son."

"Leave!!" Rickel's voice echoed and I flinched.

His father left and he exhaled audibly a few times. "Goodnight mother. You can see yourself out."

He left me and Renae standing there without another word. Renae pursed her lips. "Well I tried my best. Please take care of my son, Reese."

She hugged me again before leaving. I collapsed into one of the chairs as I tried to digest all that happened tonight.

This was more intense than any movie I've ever watched.
