Rickel***
They say in life you never appreciate things until you lose them. As I sat in the cold jail cell, I couldn't help but think of all the nights I sat at my desk working while my big plush bed lay waste. Man I would do anything to sleep in my bed tonight.
"Hey pretty boy. What are you in for?" The other guy in the cell asked. If I saw this guy on the street, I would have definitely cross to the other side. His intimidating scorpion tattoo was staring straight at me and his beard was practically hiding his mouth.
"Rape." I mumbled. The word felt dirty leaving my mouth.
The guy looked at me queerly. "Why would someone as good looking as you want to rape someone? I'm sure you have enough money to pay someone for sex."
I sighed. "Oh I'm paying alright."
The guy said something else but I wasn't paying him any attention. I leaned the side of my head on the cold wall and all I was wondering was if Reese was alright. I wasn't even angry at her. I kept blaming myself. If I didn't go out with Travis that night, all of this could have been avoided.
Poor Reese. She must be so scared at the house all by herself. I wonder if she knew I was arrested.
Who am I kidding? I have been in here for two days. My mother is sure damn well going to make sure Reese knows. I just really hope my mother doesn't scare her too much. None of this is Reese's fault. Well sure, she's the one who told the reporter everything but I'm sure back then she saw it as her only choice. She had gone through so much because of my stupidity.
I heard keys rattling and the cell opened. "Mr. Nichols, you are free to go."
"What?" I was sure that wasn't how easy things worked here.
The officer grimaced. "The victim dropped all charges against you."
"Are you sure?"
The officer shook his head. "Positive....but if you feel guilty, you can always stay a few more nights."
"Yea come on." The tattooed guy butted in. "There is so much we have to talk about."
I hurriedly walked pass the officer and into the processing room where I retrieved my belongings. My wallet was missing a few hundred dollars but I didn't complain. I'm sure I deserve way worse than that.
The sun was almost blinding me when I stepped outside. I've missed the outdoors so much: the warm sunshine, fresh wind and most of all my freedom.
I expected to see Reese waiting for me here but she was nowhere in sight and no one was here to pick me up.
Reese dropped the charges so she must have just left the station. I called her phone but it went straight to voicemail. Hmmm.....she probably left because she had a class to go to.
I had to call my mother to come pick me up. I didn't want any reporter to see me out here and cause a raucous. I couldn't handle that right now. All I wanted was to go home, take a long shower and lay in my bed.
"What happened?" My mother asked when I got into her car. "The lawyers and I were building a case to get you out."
I shook my head. "Reese dropped the charges. Can you just bring me home so I can go see her please?"
My mother sighed. "No one has seen Reese since you were arrested. She took everything she had from your house and left. She even left her extra key to the house. I don't think she's coming back son. She knows full well that she has messed up your life."
No. That couldn't be right. Reese wouldn't just leave like that. I had to see her. I still love her and I've never stopped. As for my reputation, none of that mattered now. The few days I've spent in jail was making me second guess what was really important in life.
"I guess you won't be needing that ring afterall." Mom smirked.
"Why wouldn't I need it?" If she thought I was just going to give up on Reese so easy, she is sadly mistaken.
She slammed her foot on the brakes and earned a few curse words from the driver behind us. "You cannot seriously still want to marry this girl. She got you arrested for heaven's sake!"
I closed my eyes. "Mom, can you please just take me home?" I didn't have the energy to argue right now.
My mind was fully made up. Reese was the girl for me and nothing anyone said was going to change that.
I have never stopped to notice everything in my house before but as I entered the hallway, I paused to look at every single one of the photos displayed.
I closed my eyes and inhaled the familiar scent of the living room. The house was spotless and smelled great. I am never doing anything to go back to jail again.
I ran my hand along the banister as I walked upstairs to my room.
"Reese?" I couldn't help but hope she was here.
I called her phone but it went to voicemail again. I didn't like leaving voice messages so I hung up.
The shower did wonders for me. I stood there for half an hour letting the water run down my back. I tried to clear my mind for just one second but it wasn't working.
I got out of the shower and something caught my eye.
Cantu Shea butter leave in conditioner.
I picked it up, gave it a whiff and it was like Reese was right there in front of me. She loved using this product. She wouldn't just take everything and leave this behind, right? She wants me to chase her.
I got dressed deciding to search the areas that she frequents when my phone rang.
"Yes Gaby?"
"Mr. Nichols, I heard you got out of prison. Congratulations."
"Is that why you called? I don't have time for this." I knew I sounded harsh, but I didn't care.
"No sir. You need to get to the office now!"
"What are you talking about Gaby and why the hell are you whispering?"
"The members of the board are having a meeting here and I heard them talking about taking a no confidence vote."
"Thanks Gaby."
Those damn bastards!
A no confidence vote huh? I hired them to be advisors, to make sure the company was running smoothly and to see to it that things were in order when I wasn't there.
I get arrested and they want to overthrow me out of my company? I am going to fire every last one of them!
