Reese***
We boarded the plane at 5:00pm and I was sad to leave Puerto Rico behind.
"Ahh.....you can come back to visit any time you like. Puerto Rico is not going anywhere."
I couldn't stop myself from staring through the window and a few tears escaped my eyes.
"Reese. Stop crying please.....I'll pay for you to visit every couple weeks."
I was full on crying and hiccuping by now. Rickel held me against his chest and rubbed my back.
"You'll be ok." His voice was soothing.
The hostess bought me some napkins and warm milk with cookies. I felt like such a baby. I don't even know why I'm crying anyway. It's not like someone died for me. My mom got a whole house for crying out loud. I should be overjoyed.
"I know something that will cheer you up." Rickel said when we landed.
"What?"
He smiled at me. "A makeover. All girls love that."
"Well I'm not like all girls."
"Hmmm......so you're telling me that you are willing to wear that jeans and t-shirt to the big office party?"
I hate when he's right. "Whatever."
Rickel laughed. "You're so damn stubborn. Come on. Let's get your hair and nails done so you can go pick out a dress."
We were sitting in his car in the airport's parking lot.
"So? Why aren't we leaving?" I asked. He was busy texting away on his phone.
He held up a finger to silence me. How dare him! I started opening the door to leave and he grabbed my arm.
"Where are you going?"
"Anywhere but here." I snapped at him.
"Whoa! What's wrong now?"
"Nothing. Are we going to get the dress or are we going to sit here?"
"You didn't think I was going to go to a salon with you, did you? I was waiting for her." He pointed out the window.
A beautiful, petite, chocolate skin girl was standing outside. She had dark, shoulder length hair and was wearing a tight black dress with some stunning stilettos. She looked gorgeous and I was envious of her.
We got out of the car and walked toward her.
"Janelle, this is Reese, the girl I texted you about. Reese this is Janelle."
We shook hands and she smiled at me. "It's a pleasure to meet you Reese. Shall we get going? We have a lot of things to do in a very short time."
I looked over at Rickel and he nodded. "She's my assistant."
Janelle opened the car door for me and after a short pause I got in. What a gentlemanly woman.
She and Rickel stood outside talking and I could barely read their lips. He waved a hand at me when he saw me looking at them.
A few seconds later, we were out of the parking lot and I was in a strangers car. My mother must be so proud.
"So......you're the new flavour of the month, huh?"
"What?" I asked. I was caught up in my own thoughts and wasn't paying attention to her.
She laughed lightly. "Nothing honey. I totally understand. So....we'll head over to the salon first. Is that ok with you?"
"Sure." I answered.
I didn't like the vibe I was getting from this girl. Something about her just seemed off. I couldn't quite put my finger on it yet but by the end of the day I'm sure I will.
My nails were the first thing I got done. I didn't want to be too bold so I chose a pale blue colour and added blue lowlights to my hair.
I loved the new look and for a moment I wondered if Rickel will like it too.
I shook my head. Who cares if he doesn't like it anyway. It's not like we're a real couple.
Janelle paid and we left to go find a dress. I was so exhausted that when she suggested a dress I just said yes without even looking at it first.
"Come on. Try it and let's see how it looks on you." Her tone was so condescending but I blew it off. Maybe the jetlag was causing me to assume things.
The red dress had some tiny blue flowers on the front and it clung to my body like it was a second skin. It reached mid-thigh and made me wonder what kind of party I was going to.
I shrugged. Janelle picked out the dress so I'll just have to trust her choice. She must know the dress code for the party.
She paid for the dress and we headed toward the office.
"There's a small private bathroom on the first floor. You can get ready there then come up to the party. It's in Room 6 on the third floor." Janelle smiled sweetly at me.
I went into the bathroom and fixed myself. When I was through, my reflection was a club girl. It made me remember the first time Rickel and I met.
There was loud music, flashing lights and dancing. Lots and lots of dancing and drinking.....
My phone rang and I almost jump.
"Have you bailed on the party?" Rickel asked.
"Uhm....I'm on my way up." I quickly did the finishing touch of my makeup and made my way to the third floor.
I entered the room.
There were men dressed in suits and women in formal, modest gowns. I felt like a cheap whore among these people. Maybe I should just leave...
"Reese. Over here." Janelle called out to me. She was dressed in a floor length dress and her hair was in a neat bun. When the hell did she change???
"You took forever to get ready. Rickel is waiting for you over there." I followed her well manicured finger with my eyes.
Rickel was standing with a group of men and they seemed to be talking business.
"Are you sure I can go over there now? They seem to be talking about something important."
"Come on." Janelle fanned her hand at me. "It's a party, not a business meeting. He didn't invite you here to stand in a corner. Go on."
Maybe she was right. I was invited here. I am his guest.
I strutted over to the group of men and cleared my throat.
"Hey." I called to Rickel.
"Oh. My drink in finished." One of the men handed me his glass. "Can you refill this? Thank you."
Rickel continued talking, completely ignoring me.
What the..... Why the hell did he think I was a waitress? Did Rickel tell them I'm his maid? Is that why he invited me?
I took the glass to the bar and slammed it on the counter.
"Refill?" The girl asked and my blood started to boil.
That damn Janelle! She did this on purpose! My dress was the same colour as the waitress' and the design was very similar.
I scanned the room for her. Oh I'm going to kill that girl!
