Rickel***
"So you have no idea where Reese might be?"
Gaby stood in my office with her palms locked in front of her and an innocent look on her face.
"No. Mr. Nichols. I haven't heard from her in a long while."
My instincts were telling me she was lying but I decided to give her the benefit of the doubt. I slumped back into my chair.
"Could you please inform me if you hear from her? I would hate for my mom to find her before I do."
A frown line appeared in Gaby's forehead. "Why?"
I chuckled. "My mother can get a little crazy at times.....and I know Reese doesn't like backing down. If those two come in contact, it's going to be a blood bath."
"Oh.....I'll let you know if she contacts me." She gave me a nervous smile then exited my office.
She definitely knew more than she was letting on. Why was she hiding it from me?
I should have replaced the tracker that Reese removed from her car. It would have been so easy to find her. She could be anywhere across the country by now. At least I knew she hadn't gone back home to Puerto Rico. Her mother had confirmed it when I called a few days ago. She had started to worry and I tried my best to convince her that Reese was safe and everything was alright.
Ugh!
I felt like I was searching for a needle in a haystack. Where are you Reese?
I opened my drawer and took out the family ring. I wasn't going to give up. Someday, even if it takes me forever to find her, I'm going to make Reese my wife and we are going to have beautiful kids together.....if she wants to.
I opened an email that just came in. It was from one of our distributors citing that they no longer wanted to do business with my company based on reasons they couldn't mention.
I turned off the computer. I knew the reason and I didn't care about it anymore. I had made a mistake and learned from it. If I had to start my company from scratch I will. One thing I won't do is fail, no matter how much I'm ridiculed.
I sighed. Maybe I'll just work from home for the rest of the day. I packed up the files I would need, turned the lights off and started to leave. As I opened my office door I was just in time to catch the last part of Gaby's conversation.
".....I won't be able to have drinks with you tonight. A friend invited me over to have some chilli."
Immediately goosebumps took over my body and my hopes soared. There was one person I know who makes good chilli and that was Reese. She was meeting Reese tonight.
Maybe I should just wait until she leaves and follow her....
"Rickel? You're leaving early today." Janell squeaked. She just had to see me, didn't she?
"Yes. I am." Now I couldn't turn back. "If anything comes up, call me. Good evening ladies."
Gaby didn't look up from her computer when she mumbled. "Good evening."
As I got to the parking lot, I glanced at my phone. I had two hours until regular office hours would end so I decided to sit in my car and wait for Gaby to show up. Hopefully she wouldn't work overtime today. I was a man of little patience.
I turned the radio on, pushed back my seat and scrolled through my gallery. I had so my off-guarded pictures of Reese, anyone would think I was a stalker.
I laughed of the photo of her wearing that skimpy maid outfit. She had defied my mother and it turned me on so badly. I remembered how I wanted to rip it from her body and make love to her then and there.
We've come so far since then. Now I regret being a jerk to her when she just started working for me. After dealing with Sheila, every woman who worked with me was a gold digger until I proved them otherwise.
An hour and a half later, I saw Gaby exiting the building in a hurry. Hmmmm.....she was leaving work early when I was paying her for a full day? I ought to confront her about it.
I should have slapped myself. She was doing me a favor by not making me wait the full two hours for her.
I waited until she was a few yards down the street before I started following her. I felt on edge. What if I was being foolish? She could be going to eat with any friend of hers.
I shook my head. Oh boy. The things one will do out of desperation.
We were driving for about forty-five minutes when Gaby turned into the parking lot of an apartment complex. I followed behind her carefully. The place was getting dark by now and I was hoping she wouldn't recognize my car.
I took off my work shirt and put on a smelly hoodie and cap I've had in the car for a while now.
I followed her into the building at a safe distance. She took the elevator up to the third floor and I waited a while before I went up.
There were six different apartments and I wondered how I was going to know which one she went into?
I placed my ear against the first door and listened. I heard kids screaming so I went on to the other doors.
When I reached the forth door, I hit the jackpot. I was certain it was Gaby's voice I heard.
"Hmmmm......you're living large aren't you?"
"Can I help you sir?" I jumped in surprise. A woman was an the end of the hallway staring at me as if I was a stalker or serial killer. Well, it sure looked that way. I followed my employee and was now eavesdropping.
I shook my head no then turned and hurried toward the elevator.
"Sir?" The woman called after me but I didn't look back. I couldn't let her see my face. She might recognize me from the news.
I let out an exasperated sigh once I was seated in my car. I didn't get to hear the other person's voice but I was hoping it was my Reese. I'm coming back here before going to work tomorrow. I wouldn't want to come here late when she already left.
I could sleep comfortably tonight. I kept convincing myself that I had found Reese. That she was the one living in that apartment.
